Hey Guys,

First post, so hello!

My first brew was a coffee vanilla stout, and I think I a mistake in adding ground coffee at flameout, and racking it into my carboy with the ground still in the wort.

So, my plan was to filter it (somehow, suggestions would be nice), but should I be afraid of staining out the yeast? I want to make sure I get some in the bottles so I will have good carbonation.

Is there anything I can do? What is the best way to get the ground out? Is there a concern with the yeast?
 
the problem with straining your BEER (which is what fermented wort is called) isn't removing the yeast, it's oxidizing the crap out of it...

cold crash it if you can, then be careful when you rack to the bottling bucket not to suck up the grounds

if you can't crash, you could wrap your racking cane in a sanitized paint strainer bag while you rack to the bucket...

Is there no issue their with not transferring the yeast to the bottles?
 
You want to use a paint strainer bag or muslin bag on the submerged end of your racking cane, if you use one at all. The grounds will most likely have settled to the bottom and compacted with the trub. If you rack carefully you do not even need to strain.

If you do filter the yeast cells are small enough that they will go though the mesh and you will not transfer without yeast. There will be plenty to carbonate your bottles.

Aren't paint strainer bags gigantic? I would use a small hop bag or piece of cheesecloth on the bottom/submerged end of the racking cane.
 
Is the stuff already settled at the bottom? Can't you just be careful during the racking process and leave a tad bit of beer behind?
 
Guys, thank for the advice. The education is much appreciated.

I think I am going to do the paint strainer technique. Cut a small piece, and attach it to my racking cane, sanitize, and then filter it to my bottles.

When the time comes (about another week or so), I will let you know how it does.

I do this to strain out dry hops all the time. I cut a small circle of voile fabric. (Left over from making my BIAB bag, but pretty much the same as a paint strainer or hop bag.) It's about 6" in diameter. I singed the ends to keep it from unraveling.

I put it on the end of my racking hose and use a small plastic zip wire tie to fasten it on. I leave a little slack in the "bag" to give the hops some room to fill it up without plugging the hose. Of course, I sanitize the whole thing before I assemble it all. It sits at the bottom of the keg so after a few seconds it's submerged.

I'm sure I'm introduce some oxygen with this, but it must be minimal.
