Figured I would ask this before it got too close. I have a stout that is about to be complete in a few weeks. In the mean time I am building a keezer. I was wondering if i needed a stout faucet or if a normal faucet would be fine? I know I will not have the same head/retention without the screens and the beer gas, but I don't really know enough about beer yet (will be 21 in 20 days) to know if it will cause off flavors to just let it slow carb and serve it out of a normal faucet?

Cheers all:mug:

I ran my Chocolate Oatmeal Stout with a regular CO2 setup and it was great. My local pub, had a nice brown porter on CO2 that was really good. They then switched it to beer gas / stout tap setup, and I enjoyed it even more that way.

It's a matter of money and size. If you have a large keezer, enough to hold two different kinds of gas tanks, plus kegs, have the money, then go for it.

Stouts can be served with a standard co2/faucet setup, or a nitro/beergas/stout faucet setup. The resulting beer in the glass will be different, but neither is right or wrong. Which is better is a matter of personal preference, and in my personal preference it depends on the beer.

Seriously?

Problems resulting from the manufacturing and use of homebrew by underage individuals will endanger all of us of not being able to enjoy our hobby. All it would take is a underage homebrewer killing someone by a DUI and bam, legislation to stop all homebrewing would be introduced. We all should take it seriously and not condone, much less encourage, the illegal possession of alcohol. Even if its not in the official rules, logic states that the possession of alcohol is illegal by anyone under, even if by one day, 21; and we shouldn't talk about illegal matters in this forum. Take it or leave it, that is my professional opinion.

I don't believe anything discussed here is illegal. Based on what was posted here, it sure sounds to me like the question is about how to get this beer carbonated and ready for him to enjoy on his 21st birthday, the first day it is legal for him to do so. Presumably, this beer in progress is currently in the possession of a friend or family member who is over 21 if it is not legal for him to possess alcohol at his age in his jurisdiction.

(edited to complete the thought)

Woah im sorry. Didn't think this would cause such a fuss. The beer is currently at my parents and will just be racked to secondary this weekend. Will not be done till after christmas which is when I will be 21. I am a supporting member of this site and would not intentionally endanger your rights as a home brewer.

Happy holidays.

It's ok. Contrary to popular opinion, possession and consumption of alcohol by those under the age of 21 is not illegal in all jurisdictions. Possession vs purchase, parental consent and supervision, etc all differ depending on the state. Some people just assume what's true for their locale is true the world over. There are certainly valid reasons to be concerned about discussing illegal activity on this forum, but I think the reaction to your question is a bit extreme.

To answer your question, I use a normal faucet and regular CO2 for my stouts and they taste just fine. I'm sure if I used a special faucet or nitro I'd have better results, but I haven't heard any complaints yet. Maybe one day I'll upgrade, but no hurry.

Okay, great just didnt want to ruin my first stout.

As far as stouts go, your opinion of your beer is the one that matters. Actually, any ale or lager is the right one because that is the one you chose to brew. I hope you see that the people on this website are helpful and honest to a fault. As far as your not being 21 yet, I can agree to the point of an earlier post. If you lived in a state that just legalized home brewing, and we knowingly gave you instruction on how to brew beer, even though you are/were underage, and you got drunk, caused an accident, and told the police you learned how to here, the crap would hit the fan. And, I am sure all the naysayers that opposed the passing of that particular law, would say, "We told you so", and the rest of that store is obvious... Please don't be offended, we really do care.
