Going to assemble my own stir plate, seen a few ideas on the net, just one question regarding the magnets , which way up?
Both same pole up to grab stir stick ?
One magnet up and one down ?
Please help before I glue into position on the fan

I just filled my flask with water, dropped the bar in, set it on the plate and the ol' trial and error. Works like a charm.

Stir bar SHOULDN'T be magnetized so polarity SHOULDN'T matter.

Even if the bar is plain magnetic metal the magnets will turn it into a magnet so to speak, with 2 poles. Would work best with opposite poles on each end.

I've just wrecked my stir bar by playing with it on the back of a speaker magnet (don't ask me why as it just seemed like fun at the time)

It WAS magnetized but now it's basically inert and no longer works on my stir plate no matter what I try!

I won't be doing that again...

I think there is some confusion over the two definitions of magnetic - magnetic is a funny word, it means two things, and really depends on context.

Magnetic could mean that something is capable of accepting a magnetic field so to speak. OR, it could mean that something HAS a magnetic field.

Stir bars are magnetic in that they are made of metal under a Teflon coating that can become attracted by a magnet. They are not magnetically charged.

The stir bar I bought was magnetically charged, and would happily carry out Fridge magnet duties - actually this is how I stored it so that I wouldn't loose it!

So, in my case your statement does not apply.

Really? I wonder why... seems unnecessary. Nails, paper clips, the center pin of an old CDrom all work.

Stirstarters.com has a doit yourself page and it states to make sure you reverse the polarity of your magnets. Stir bars should be magnitized end to end so having the same polarity up on plate would cause thrown stirbars

I just made one and got the Magnets wrong... it kept trying stand the stir bar up on end over one side of the magnet pair, and then throw it. Pulled one magnet off and flipped it over, and now all is well.
