Are specialty grains steeped in the boil kettle prior to the boil or in a seperate vessel and added to the kettle?

However you want to do it, as long as you get the grains out prior to boiling. I do them in a separate pot and strain into my brew kettle, but many put them in a grain bag and steep them right in the brew pot.

I steep in my boiling pot. I run the wort over the grains a couple times and then back into the pot, and start my boil.

Another thing I have been doing which works great is to steep in my oven, with the temp set to the steep temp. I have a new stove that has good temp setting accuracy, so steeping is pretty easy.

I steep in the boil kettle with a full load of water and use a big grain bag. This lets me stir the grain (in the bag) and maximizes the extraction. Then I add the extract and start the boil.

In the brewpot is the easiest... why add another pot to the stove you know. Put them in a grainbag and its the easiest part of the brew.

I never thought of that. I would imagine that that would work really well. That's two things I've learned in the last five minutes.
