I recently started moving from dry yeast to liquid and have been enjoying the results, but i had a question about the starter itself.

I i have an extract recipe that calls for say 7 pounds of DME, and i need a 2L starter. When i make the starter with say 6oz of DME, do i subtract that from the 7 pounds, so when i boil i am using 6oz less than i should for a total of 7 pounds when i am done? Or would the 6oz be seperate, and total extract in the beer end up being 7 pounds plus the 6oz?

Once the yeast is done replicating in the starter, you dump out (decant) the left over liquid leaving mostly yeast at the bottom. So the starter itself has an insignificant effect on your recipe.

Just a comment. The size of a starter is based on the estimated OG of the beer and the production date of the yeast. A certain size of starter doesn't necessarily fit the needed pitch rate. Following a recipes note for a certain size starter may not be the best option for you.

I just used those numbers as a generic example to ask the question.

Thanks for the responses guys.
