Lucas is finally releasing the ORIGINAL movies to DVD.

Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars films on DVD.

Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).

Sweet.

Sounds like a money making scheme of "inter-galactic" proportions.

Could you be any more negative?

I don't think it is a money-making "scheme". I think Lucas listened to the diehards that they wanted the "classic" 70s/80s technology movies on DVD.

Sure, Lucas will make money, but do you really think he needs the cash?

Brewpastor--the whole article in the link provides some of the changes Lucas made. Bottom line is Lucas made some changes with superior technology (computers) and the diehards didn't like the re-releases.

Laser Discs! Get your Laser discs!! :D

The only thing that every really bugged me, (trust me, I lost no sleep over it tho) was the end of Jedi when Lucas put in Christiansen instead of the other guy as Luke's father... I just thought it was unnecessary... Again tho, it's not my obsession....

I wasn't trying to be negative. It was a joke....I forgot to add the smile.:D

This is not about Lucas anyway. What portion of the profits do you think he'll get (rhetorical actually) anyway? He'll get a large check, sure, but it'll be very small in the end is my guess.

DVD? Ancient technology. Even the new HD-DVD's are worthless. Everything is going to digital-on-demand. When terrabyte hard drives become a reality, people will no longer want house-cluttering DVD cases and stands. It'll be all about the Media PC and the lap top.

Anyone here remember the online community in 1992? One gig hard drives cost around a grand and were as rare as digitized porn movies.

Once we make the switch to satellite-based broad-band or we figure out a way to better utilize all this fiber optic cable we've knitted the earth a sweater with, we'll have terrabyte transfer rates and quadrobyte storage. In other words, physical media is dead. DVDs, CDs, and all the pollution they cause.

i still love my old vynill records and turntable the best of all my music and don't own an ipod or something similar...:D

I'm glad he's doing this. Of course he's going to make a boat load of money off of this. I'm sure he owns the rights to everything he has done.

Have you heard the story of why it took so long to make the most recent three movies.

He got divorced and his wife got a big percentage of everything he made for ten years after the divorce. So about eleven years after he started making the new movies. (I hear there is also a TV show in the works too)

I saw the original Star Wars when I was about 13 years old. I would love to be able to see the same movie that I saw then. Since then he has added special effects and characters that weren't in the original (Jaba the Hut for one)

Exactly. That is why I want this set too.

I want this set so Han shoots first in the cantina like the dirty smuggler he is.
But is his name pronounced 'han' or haaan' like the later movies by the princess? I personally love the bit in the first movie when the droids try and escape and a storm trooper hits his head on the door.... :D

I was 18 and just graduated from Air Force Basic Training.

What is the difference?

The difference is that the release they did do has all these "new and improved" scences. Junk they put in because they thought they would be doing us a favor by putting scences in there that were never part of the movie to begin with. They did the same thing to a few movies actually..... E.T. for instance.

Jaba the Hut was in the original. They added some more scences in the newer release, that's what you were talking about right?

They are working on 3-D versions of the original films. They are really just waiting for the technology in the theaters to catch up.
