Spots on Yeast Starter

I used Wyeast Belgian Abby II, Perfect Pitch, and Fermcap. I've never seen anything like this before. Have any of you run into something like this?

Did you boil DME? It looks like you may have scorched some of it. Flakes of scorched extract.

I used the Perfect Pitch from Nothern Brewer on this one. I did boil 32oz of water though. None of this showed up until I threw the yeast in and it began fermenting. Could it just be the Belgian Abby II?
