Hey all I'm experimenting with batches. I'd like to split an IPA equally and add 2 different fruit types.

So how do I do this. Make 2, 3-4 gal batches or split a 5 gal batch.

I'm worried about the yeast, in primary and being bottled. Even distribution.

Your thoughts and wisdom are ALWAYS helpful.

Split a 5 gal batch. That way, you'll get two beers with identical mash and boiling.
 
Ok so it's that simple?

Just rack off 2, 2.5 gal secondary's and add fruit and see how it turns out?

The yeast and all that will still be present enough for carbing?

I will add to be sure to do this in a properly sized vessel. (i.e. a 3 gallon bucket). Do they make those? Having too much head space can introduce oxygen and increase chances of infections. Good luck.
 
Regular 5 or 6.5 gallon buckets work fine for split batches. There will be a blanket of CO2 on top of the beer to protect it from oxygen. No worries!
 
They sell 3 gallon carboys and one gallon. Ive found 2gallon buckets, 1.5 gal widemouth glass jars that I use to use, but mainly use my 3 gallon glass carboy for 2.5 gal batches. 3 gallon buckets are kinda hard to find youll probably find more 2 gallon buckets.

When adding fruit or dryhopping in secondary it is better to be able to have very little headspace if possible. Although you can just dryhop in primary which is what I do. I think most like to secondary if adding fruit though and even triatary to clear maybe. Ive never used fruit in beer I think though just dryhop.
 
I understand the head space thing but I can't justify the buying of more carboys or buckets. If anything the carboys are out cause that would be a pain in the a$$ to clean. I enjoy buckets. I actually just got a new 8 gal Vinters bucket. Plenty of head space. It will be easy to dry hop or add fruit to that.

I use a strainer anyway to filter the junk out.

I plan to blend the fruit choice and just add it to batch in a grain bag.

Split the 5 gallons after the boil. Pitch a packet of yeast in each one. 5 gallon buckets/carboys will work fine.
