Special Mug/Stein?

I'm going to Detroit tomorrow, and I'm going to bring my favorite beer mug. Anyone else travel with a favorite mug or stein? You can't just drink beer out of anything, right?

I live about 10 miles north of Detroit. Whenever I go there I can't say that I've ever given a second thought to what type of beer drinking vessel I should bring. I'm usually more focused on which handgun I need to dress around, and how many clips may be required.

Ooops! To get back on topic, I don't have a nice stein or tankard to take when I travel. I intend to rectify that oversight in the near future.

I'm not actually going to the city (except for Tigers vs. Yankees on Wednesday). If you're ten miles north of the city, I'll be near you.

SWMBO thinks I'm crazy for wanting to bring my beer mug to a different state. "There will be cups there" she says. "The beer will taste the same."

Am I really as ridiculous as she says I am?

Don't forget the rule of "red light or not if someone is walking tward your car............GO!!!" This is the usual advice from the local law enforcement officers in good old detroit. When deciding what handgun to dress around you must also consider the area you will be visiting and base your selection on capacity and stopping power. For instance if you will be anywhere off of Harper avenue after dusk Maximum stopping power with high capacity is highly recommended. If you will simply be visiting the water front and perhaps enjoying a stroll along the river walk high capacity with little recoil is recommended. For other areas leave the hand gun at home and get one of these :rockin:

No, you pay $8 for a 16oz plastic cup of some kind of BMC beer. I'd be surprised if they even let you use your beer stein. There is a big sign when you enter the stadium prohibiting bottles and glass. I didn't make it to any games last year, maybe they have added some craft beers to their menus.

I would need to bring my favorite three glasses with me, and that wouldn't work. I don't drink most beers out of steins because it really doesn't suit the beer well. I do like when I can get a .5L Willi Becher filled, a good tulip, or a goblet for the certain Belgians I actually like in those glasses. I'm particular about glassware, but more about the shape, how clean it is, and how appropriate it is for the style. Plus, I wouldn't trust a bartender to not break my glasses.

A little OT, but when I was in Europe a lot of the places would hold steins for their regular customers. It was cool to see some of the really old ones and see some old timers actually drinking out of them still. There are some pretty neat traditions there that I wish we had in the US.

There are bars like that in the States. I know of places with mugs for regulars and the like, for sure. It is pretty neat. I'd be the jerk who wanted a damn tulip glass still.

A local bar here has an excellent beer selection and they have a card with numbers 1 - 75 on it, and each beer is given a number. When u try a beer they stamp your card and when u get all 75 beers stamped you get a really nice hand made mug. I love it because that place really opened my eyes to good beer. I use it as much as possible... its kind of a bragging right around here

Yea, I'm just staying at my parents for a week, and I brought my own beer (a case of Wayerbacher and some homebrew) and my own mug, and SWMBO now thinks my beer obsession is getting out of hand.

And I will NOT be drinking at Tigers vs. Yankees on Wednesday. $8.00 for a glass of BMC is not money well spent, IMO.

Detroit Beer Company is right around the corner from Comerica Park. They have some good beer and their spent grain crust pizzas are good as well. If you're feeling adventerous try they seared ahi tuna appetizer. It is amazing!

I also completed one of those beer club things at a restaurant by my in-law's house. They don't give you a particular glass, but whenever I order something on tap I get an imperial pint instead of a shaker glass.

Thanks for the advice. We were going to go out to eat before the game. Maybe I can convince my party to go there.
