I am not getting a secure wire connection to the unit using 14 gauge stranded wire. After clamping the wire I can pull it free, with not to much force. I am turning the clamp screw down to what I think may be near the breaking point of the plastic. Can a more secure connection be obtained by soldering the strands before clamping, or is 14 gauge to heavy?

I used either 14 or 16 AWG stranded wire with no issues in mine. Make sure you strip back the insulation to expose approximately 1/4" of wire. Ensure only the bare wire is clamped onto with the terminal block and not any of the insulation. Good luck!

Also, make sure you're clamping in the correct location. I remember it not being obvious which side (top or bottom) of the clamping mechanism to tighten to, but it's been a while.

As to your question, there should be no problem soldering the stranded wire before clamping either.
