I tasted a Sierra Nevada Torpedo the last weekend for the first time. This beer was awesome. I had previously purchased an SNPA kit from AHB and was wondering if could add to it to get close to a Torpedo recipe. The kit comes with:

9 lbs - 2 row
1 lbs - Carapils
1 lbs - Crystal 40

1 oz - Perle (bittering)
1 oz - Cascade (flavor)
1 oz - Cascade (aroma)
1 oz - Cascade (dry hop)

My thought is to add a couple of lbs of 2 row, some magnum, and citra? Does this sound reasonable? Not sure how much and when though.

I actually kegged my clone of this last week and it came out pretty close so maybe I can chime in. The nice thing about SN is that they post their ingredients on their website.

I used 2-Row and C-60 for my malts. No carapils. Not gonna hurt if you use it, but I chose not to and the beer has great body and head retention so take it for what its worth.

SN lists Magnum as the sole bittering hop. So I used..

Bittering: Magnum
Aroma/Flameout/Whirlpool (dealers choice): Magnum and crystal hops
Dry hop (I dry hopped 7 days since I know they aggressively DH with their Torpedo): Magnum (I know its weird, but thats straight info from SN), Crystal, and Citra.

Basically... Ditch the Cascade :D

Boil for 90 mins. US-05 or WLP001

I have a recipe that I found someplace (probably here on HBT) some time ago:

Torpedo Extra IPA Clone
5 gallons
OG = 1.070
FG = 1.018
IBU = 70
SRM = 11
ABV = 7.2%

Ingredients:
14 lbs pale malt
11 oz caramel malt (60L)
1.2 oz of 14% AA Magnum (60 mins)
1.0 oz Magnum (5 mins)
1.0 oz Crystal (5 mins)
.67 oz Magnum (dry hop)
.67 oz Crystal (dry hops)
.67 oz Citra (dry hops)
White Labs WLP001 or Wyeast 1056 American Ale

Mash at 152 degrees. Boil for 90 minutes. Ferment at 68 degrees.

I made it and it turned out really good. I couldn't compare it to the real Torpedo since it's not available here in Chile.

One of the keys of the torpedo's hop flavor is the hop Torpedo that SN invented. Using a hop back or a hop rocket would be the same thing.

Thats pretty similar to what I did, only I used a full Oz for all the dry hopping. 1 oz Magnum, 1 oz citra, 1 oz crystal. But other than that, pretty close

So I think I'll keep the C-40 and Carapils since they are all in the same bag. I'll ditch the original hops and do this:

13 lbs 2 row (I'll add 4 lbs)
1 lbs Carapils
1 lbs Crytstal 40

1.25 oz Magnum (60 mins)
1.0 oz Magnum (5 mins)
1.0 oz Crystal (5 mins)
1.0 oz Magnum (dry hop)
1.0 oz Crystal (dry hops)
1.0 oz Citra (dry hops)

US-05

Should give me:
OG 1.071
FG 1.018
ABV 7.3
IBU 60.7
