They just closed the university!!! I thought for a hot minute I'd have to drive all the way in then they'd decide that the blizzard was strong enough to send people home...But no, someone sane evidently is in charge of making the decision...So no school!

Of course they could made this decision 45 minutes ago and I wouldn't now be tanked on coffee.

But that means that I'm off with pay til the 5th of January. :ban:

While some of you in warmer climates have to work, I'm a man of leisure for over 2 weeks.:D

I'm bored already....

Is 6:30 am too early to start drinking? Chriso sent me a choice selection of beers including some Barleywines and this, which seems fitting...

Most folks around here have a Christmas Break. Or AKA 'Winter Break' for all you non God fearin types :p

Nicely done, Revvy! We're just getting rain here today with pockets of the frozen stuff....but I'm "working' in the most general sense, doing some cleaning around the house.

My place is a mess....I SHOULD take advantage of this extra day and clean, that way I'll have a nice, purdy loft to go stir crazy in for the next few days.

I know the feeling, mate- all too well. Not much on my plate as far as work projects go, so I'll probably do some baking (two loaves of no-rise sourdough are wrapped in towels for the second rise) interspersed with cleaning and laundry.

My dog has the right idea, he's curled up beside me on the couch right now. :D

oooohhh...good Idea, I could put together a batch of bread!!!

I also made up a batch of cookie dough to bake today. A very interesting recipe that contains Abuelita brand Mexican hot chocolate and Cayenne pepper (I used Chili Powder instead) in it...Sort of a chocolate mole' icebox cookie..

I was planning to post the recipe after I baked them.

We ended up with about a fifth of an inch of ice, topped by a couple inches of snow. Pretty much all the schools in Omaha are cancelled, not sure about the Univeristy. I kind of hope so. I don't like my Step Daughter having to drive to her final with the streets as messed up as they are. Dang city plows the snow off and buffs the ice to a nice and slick surface. Heck they should just drive zamboni's.

Hopefully she won't have to go in.

I don't get the blizzard to start my Christmas Holiday. However we do finally get some needed info today. Wifes ex pleads to two felony counts of sex assualt on a child and will NEVER see his kids again! Maybe we can begin the process of putting this in the rearview mirror and making our blended family stronger.

Not trying to be a downer, really! Merry Christmas to those so inclined and Happy Holidays to EVERYONE!

Supposed to get a foot or so around here today so the girls are home with me. I'll be working from home (actually lots to do), making sure they don't drive me insane in addition to making sure my wife gets safely home from work.

Cleaning house, too. Tomorrow is our annual progressive dinner/walk in the neighborhood. Five families, 20 people, including kids. Adults walking around the neighborhood druck. Can't wait.:D

...20 people...walking around the neighborhood druck.

We just call that Saturday in my family. :cross:

All of your more northernly folks can happily keep your snow! I hope you enjoy it! Maryland is setting up for the usual rainfest for Christmas. When I was a kid, the fire department would drive a Santa Claus through our neighborhood and he ALWAYS seemed to aim for the puddles when he chucked candy canes at us!

I'd call it Saturday, too, if any of these families actually had family around here. Two of us are from Mass., one from Maine, one from the UK and one is a townie, but he's kind of a dork just included because he recently got divorced and won't go away.:D

Snow rocks. Love it. Especially now that I know my 9.5 hp snowblower will be fired up later. Bought the new toy on the cheap in summer of '07 and used it once last winter.

We had ours two weeks ago. Great time.

Our house is kind of in the middle, so every time we moved houses, we'd pass through our house and fill up at the tap with my Oktoberfast.

Revvy, drink that winter ale. Great start to the morning. I'd pair it up with some sausage and hash browns. :cross:

I protest dammit!

I work for gunbermint and should not have to work in such conditions but those with power have yet to make the call. What a miserable day.

We have absolutely no rain, snow, or even a glimpse of a cloud in the sky and the daytime high is going to be a teeth *******ing 60*F. Man, if this winter intensity keeps up I just dunno how I am going to get through it.

I take it Revvy decided to have that beer.

Must be baking and basting right now! :tank:

Hmmm, think I will join you Revvy. Try some more BBC Holidale

Baking some bread would be fun too but I don't want to take on too much...

;)

We've done lots of authentic/Aztec chocolate combo's. VERY tasty. If you like the combo you try, you might also use Chipotle powder. Even had green chili chocolate from a guy in Sante Fe. Chocolate and pepper just freaking go together well.

I hate you guys with jobs like that where once things get even the slightest bit dangerous everyone goes or stays home. In my (current) line of work we are told to GO to work just in case it gets too bad to GET to work we will already BE here. They even supply us with cots and food for such emergencies. I love snow but with this job I almost hate it.

mmmm...

Holidale is pretty darn tasty. Not nearly as orgasmic as some barley wines I have had but very nice. I heard they used rye in it this year. I have not had too many beers with rye so I can't pick it out, but it does have a different taste I cannot quite pinpoint.

I convinced the package store to get some in for me. They wanted to know if I wanted a case? :drunk:

Guess I should have said yes....

I'm being good, and not drinking. I haven't done much so far but watching the snow fall. I tried to nap, but already having dosed on coffee, that was a pitiful attempt.

I set some bottles to soak, then I made a bit of bread pudding for brunch. Of the 47 banana rum breads I made, 7 of them didn't look good, they were on the bottom of the pile and kinda got flattened by the others, so I decided to keep them for myself. I sliced on up and stuffed it in a ceramic rammikin, then whipped up and egg with some milk, a drop of vanilla, and a capful of rum. I poured it over the bread and let it soak for a while, then sprinkled some brown sugar on top, and stuck it in an oven for 20 minutes...

Yum...

I wish I had remembered that I had some raisins in the cupboard. It would have been great in there.

Being good?

Phooey.

If you want a nap a nice big beer will help counter all that caffeine.

;)

I don't think there is anything wrong with drinking in the AM. Hell put some amaretto in your hot chocolate or something, or heck I'm with everyone else crack open that barleywine.

By the way it's snowing here too, which hardly ever happens, luckily I work 4 days a week and I have today off, the rest of the week sucked driving to work.

Cheers Revvy, enjoy the early break!

Here they closed all the public skools... but University is still open, so I'm chillin' @ work. Streets are straight up fugly.... sidewalks are worse.... After today, I just gotta get through Monday and Tuesday. Then I'm off the rest of the week, and all of the week of New Years (except for 8 hours of flex time I'll be using to get a few odd jobs done at work).

Fridays are bar night, so SWMBO and I are going to get a couple drinks, then slowly push our way home through the ice. She's going to be toe-up by then, she gets 2 free drinks at lunch for their holiday luncheon, and 2 free drinks mid-afternoon, when their company goes back to the restaurant to open gifts. AND she gets of an hour early, and will have to kill that hour by drinking cheap happy-hour pints at the local brewpub. Poor SWMBO.

On the way home, I'll need salt & sand, because shoveling this morning did NOTHING for the sidewalks except remove the top layer of snow, exposing the sheet of ice. It was/is more like 1/2" - 3/4" thick here in Lincoln.

As far as your beer, Mr. Revvy..... I recommend you eat a lunch, THEN tear into that Snowbound ale. It's spiced and brewed with Honey, so it's quite a flavorful brew... but more importantly, that fugger is STRONG. Put the Snowbound in yer, then take a nice warm cozy nap... in time to wake back up for dinner, and contemplate which beer to drink next. :p

Considering your choices are Barleywine, Oaked IPA, Rogue IIPA, or Oaked Yeti, I'm pretty sure you can't choose incorrectly. :fro:

I'll be off for two weeks in an hour or so.

+1 on the barleywine, just get the cookie recipe posted before you have too much. :D

Thanks to you b'ds rambling on I picked up three bottles of Snowbound, one will be cracked later this afternoon after I get through a few Weizenbocks. :)

Then I'll no doubt be :drunk: rambling later...:cross:

All the schools in Yamhill County are closed and have been all week. Four inches of fluff on top of an inch of frozen slush this morning. It's been snowing steadily for two days. It's so still out there, it's like the snow is in slow motion. My fence had 2-3" of snow standing on each wire. In NJ, we had ice barrels on the wires, but here the snow just stands on end.

I probably won't leave the property until the USPS receives my holiday sausage package. That's worth the trip.

I don't know: Tannen Bomb, Black Panther or Old Bog Water? Nothing but the afternoon dog walk on my schedule.
