Hey guys,

First time poster, new brewer here!

This is my second ever batch I've brewed, I brewed this last night. During the boiling step, when adding hops my wife wanted to add them. She kinda just dumped them in, and it caused the wort to slightly boil over. It wasn't too much, but it was enough to cause me to worry about the IBUs and hoppy flavor of the stout.

I made a Russian imperial stout, and the boil called for 1oz of hops, boil 15 min, then .5oz hops, boil for 45 min.

Upon adding the 1oz of hops, that's when the boil over occurred... Will this effect the hoppyness of my brew too much? The second time I added the hops, we were more careful, and we added it slowly on a lower heat setting and nothing boiled over.

What do you guys think? Will my IBU's be ok?

Note: Upon adding water and getting the Original Gravity to spec, it was spot on in the range it needed to be in, and I would say out of the 5 gallon batch, we got up to 4.75 gallons. It was only a little under due to the boil over.

Thanks for reading this!

You will be fine. It takes time for the IBU's/ alpha acids to come out of the hops, longer you boil more bitter, less boil time more of the hop aroma and non bitter flavor. In the future if using a smaller pot, remove from the heat when adding extract or hops to avoid boil overs or scorching of the extract. :mug:

Thanks much! I'll remember this next time.

It definitely DID boil over, I was just scared the hops I just added came out of the pot, during the boil over. You don't think that happened?

Pellet hops (which I'm assuming you're using) dissolve pretty quickly when they hit the boiling wort. You probably didn't lose too much. You could taste your hydrometer sample and get an idea of where it stands on bitterness

1.5 oz sounds pretty light for an RIS

Boil over is a right of passage for new brewers. Especially with the SWMBO watching. Your beer will be fine.

In addition to turning off the heat or removing the pot from heat, you could use fermcap or a water spray bottle. Even better option would be to get a bigger pot, if at all possible. Cheers.

I kind of thought the same, but as stated this was my second brew, ever. So I used the Brewers best kit, and that's what came with it...

On the box it said it would be between 35-40 IBUs... I really love hops and stouts and IPAs so I'll be totally bummed if it doesn't have that nice bitter punch... :(

For reference, here's the recipe I used: http://www.brewersbestkits.com/pdf/1046 2013 Russian Imperial Stout Recipe.pdf

Should be ok for that beer. It's not a huge RIS in the above 1.10 range so the IBUs should be fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It'll come out fine.
