Hey yall, I have three 5 gallon extract batches done so far. Only one of those three is in the bottle, carbonated, and being drank. Most of my stuff is borrowed from a buddy of mine who stopped brewing. I have been slowly getting my own gear, such as my Fastferment conical fermenter.

Anyway, so far I am loving it. Even getting my wife to drink something other than Bud Light. Best benefit so far is I can get "normal" beer from my basement, instead of having to go to the liquor store.....friggin Utah.

Ya it's a great hobby. I'm finding the quality of what I'm making far exceeds the cheap BMC type lagers I used to drink. Including all the gear, if I'm being honest, cost is a bit more than what I was spending before but I'm getting a LOT more beer for my money and it's way better quality.

What I didn't expect was how much additional enjoyment I get from beer knowing a bit more about how it's produced and what each style is generally aiming for. For example I have always found IPAs hit and miss but never really known why, as a result I didn't bother buying them. Since starting brewing I now consider buying IPAs a learning exercise, being able to be more specific about what qualities of a beer I like or don't like. For me this increases the enjoyment I get from drinking beer.
