My daughter loves Skinnydip and was wondering if I could brew a clone for her. Problem is, I don't have a clue about Skinnydip. So, if anyone knows about a clone, or has attemped a copy, I'd really like to hear about it. Thanks...... :eek:

Fingers! Dude i haven't been on the board for while, but i remember you from some funny posts from '07. Yeah, daughter. She's 37, but still turns the heads of high school boys. She really likes that pseudo belgian stuff. Wish i could come up with a start at this thing...:) Cheers
 
Well, I'm glad you're back, Sudbuster. If you hadn't asked your question so that I'd realize that Skinnydip was a beer, I might have found myself showing up naked with a towel at a very inappropriate time. I hate when that happens.
 
It is new belgiums light beer. If I were you, I would maybe try and brew an american or belguim amber and just caught back on the fermentables a little to make a beer with less body, calories and alcholol.

Funny story....the brewmaster at new belgium didn't want to brew skinny dip. He said why on earth would I want to make a beer with less alcohol and less body!?
 
It's been a while since I had one, but I remember a very grainy, wheat-like flavor. A grain bill consisting of about 80% pilsner malt and 20% white wheat (or even flaked wheat) sounds about right. The ABV is 4.2%, so an OG of around 1.040 should put you in the ballpark. They claim to use Cascade hops and lime leaf (see Kaffir lime leaves). Go with low IBUs and a subtle finishing addition. Use a clean, flocculant yeast strain like Nottingham or US-05.

Thanks Yuri. I suppose I'll have to pick some up and see what the job might be like. She'll have to be content with some Scottish 70 for a while. BTW, how is your steam heated ubermashtun coming along? An update would be nice. :)

New Belgium's Skinny Dip is a summer seasonal and I believe it has been replaced by their fall seasonal which is Hoptober (This is a new brew). You might be able to find a few six pack floating around however I wouldn't be surprised if most stores have replaced it with Hoptober by now. If for some reason you cant find any let me know. I might have a few stashed away and I also live just a couple of miles from the brewery. :tank:

thanks for the info and the offer. Mostly i brew lagers and scottish ales so i'm off in an area i don't know much about. It would be kind of a challenge though to try to do a knockoff. :)
