I just installed a pickup tube on my brew kettle. I have just been using gravity to move wort to carboy with a hose on the ball valve.

When transferring wort I have the carboy on the floor well below the kettle on a work table. A 2 1/2' hose extends from the ball valve down to the carboy.

With the pickup tube installed, will just opening the ball valve create a siphon through the hose so the pickup tube works properly or do I need to "prime" the hose?

The siphon will establish itself as long as the liquid level is above the ball valve, and the end of the hose is below the kettle.
