I just had boulder beer's singletrack the other day and now I am hooked on this idea of a copper ale. I have been looking around for recipes for the past few days and all I have been able to find is a clone recipe for Copperhook Ale. I was wondering, what exactly makes a copper ale? Is it just the coppery color, or is the flavor as well? If anyone has any experience with copper ales (especially those who posted a few years back about copper ale recipes), or any ideas for developing a clone that would be great.
I am currently an extract w/specialty grains brewer.

Boulder Beer's website says that they use: Medium Caramel, 2-Row, flaked rye, and carapils, with nugget and tettnang hops

The recipe I found for a copperhook clone uses: 6 lbs pale lme, 1 lb pale dme, .5 lb munich, .25 lb crystal 80L, and 2 oz roasted barely, with chinook, willamettes, and perle hops.

Yeah I did. I debated either reviving that old thread or hoping the people who contributed to it would pitch in their 2 cents worth. Their recipes definitely seem to be all grain recipes and I do not have the capabilities yet so I was hoping I could get some advice for extract w/specialty grains.

Also I was hoping someone could actually define a copper ale for me. Boulder beer calls theirs an american pale ale, red hook I dunno what they call theirs, and otter creek calls theirs an altbier. Is it purely the color and any beer with a copper color can be called a copper ale, or is it a flavor thing? And either way, what is it that gives a copper ale this quality?

I know these questions might be perfectly mundane for someone who has done some brewing, but as a new brewer with only 1 under my belt, I feel a bit lost when it comes down to what malts do what.

Did you ever find a singletrack recipe? I would love to have it if you were successful.. thx Can't buy it in Ohio...had it at Denver airport...would like to brew it.
