Hi all, i'm in the planning stages of a Brutus10 (non automated) style setup and was looking at ignition ideas, and feel like a primer on what people are talking about...

What i was looking for is a way to use a spark or pilot light to keep 2 11" banjo lit.

my current method is a sweating torch.

modding an automated setup could work too, flip switch to turn on fire, flip switch back to turn off.

Any help/reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

A pilot would be nice for that, but you could even have a sparker to light your pilot.

Two ways of automating, lower cost standing pilot gas valve and pilot burner, higher cost electric ignited pilot system with 24V gas valves. Electric ignition can be used with high pressure burners, it requires 2 solenoid valves, 1 for pilot, 1 for burner gas flow. Rough cost for low pressure furnace valve and pilot setup is $80, for electric ignition about twice as much.

what would i need for the electric ignition?

Edit: i've seen a lot of honeywell dialogue on the low pressure solution for what i was thinking, has anyone seen an LPG (high pressure) solution?

If I am reading this right, you are looking for a cheap and effective way to do the following

1: light your burner remotely
2: control the flow of gas

1 has lots of options. The cheapest you could try would a push button bbq igniter. You can buy these at almost every hardware store. You could also try a spark generator, when I was reseaeching my potato cannons some people used tasers to ignite propane or ng. You could have a pilot light also but that will require more plumbing and valves and stuff.

2 on the other hand has much more complexity. This is something I am quite interested in as well. We are building a stand with a direct fire boil keggle. The burner will be from our turkey frier which I think is behind a 20 psi regulator on a normal 10# propane tank.

So on number 2 I think we both have the same question. Is there a electric valve that can handle high pressure propane. Also, if you get a high pressure eletric valve will it work if you later switch to low pressure natrual gas. I would think a high pressure valve could also handle low pressure ng.

I have a brutus 10 with three high pressure burners and I use a tee before the soloniod valves with a needle valve and 1/4" tubing up to the side of the burners that I use as a pilot. I just crimped the end and it to give me a pretty nice looking flame, took me a good long time messing with it to get them to stay lit with the wind blowing but it turned out and seems to be working pretty good so far. I have it wired so I can manually turn on all three burners or I can use a temp controller to "auto" turn on two of the burners. Of course I have to light the pilot lights before I am going to use the burner, maybe I will look at adding a bbq sparker to light them... There are many options out there.

what about a replacement piezoelectric igniter for a gas grill (the one with the red knob that you push)?

Or is that too simple?

Do you have pictures? What kind of solenoid valve? Propane or NG

I only have this shot. Its raining like hell so I'm not going out to the brew shed to snap picks but this gives an idea. If you want some other shot let me know.
