Sight glass advice**

So I'm a BIAB brewer and have been using a keggle now for about 5 months. I thought to add a sight glass to the keggle to make life a bit easier.
I saw two options out there, one had a thermometer with a 4 inch probe.

Should I buy that one????



Would it rip through the bag???

Are these dumb questions??

I used a an elbow with a piece of silicone tubing as the "sight glass". On top I use a piece of copper tube crimped around an eye-bolt. Then I simply added water by the gallon and calibrated it. It works nice and was very cheap, plus I don't have to worry about breaking it or how to clean it.

Not dumb questions. I love my sightglasses. The temp probe could rip the bag if it protrudes too far into the keggle. I don't know how high the risk is, it may not be much of a risk at all.

I have 2 sightglassess from 2 different companies. I highly reccomend bobby_m's sightglass. It is very good quality.

The shorter thermometer (3"?) only goes about 1" or less into the pot. I'd say to add the thermometer. If you don't like that for some reason, you can get a 1/2" brass NPT plug from Lowes.

I bought a length of double clear polycarbonate tubing from McMaster-Carr along with a pipe thread to compression fitting and a street elbow. The top of the sight glass is held by an eye bolt.

Sight Glass - $3.29 (9176T2)
Compression Fitting - $4.57 (50915K328)
Street Elbow - $9.83 (4464K38)
Eye Bolt - $8.68 (9489T57) for 5
Total - ~$27

And it looks like the brewhardware.com solution is a bit cheaper...

I also got a bobby_m sight glass.

I got the weld-less with a thermometer and could not be happier. It was a cinch to install after watching the videos on his website. Getting his kit took all the research and guesswork out of the equation.

The probe on mine is 2 inches long and was not a problem with one BIAB batch I have done.

Ordered the sight glass from Bobby_M without the thermometer. I have a floating one and the popular CDN digital......whatever.
Either way it'll take the guess work out of the problem. I tend to boil off more then I like to.
