Show and Tell....

Ok. So I know I am new to this, and someone has probobly done this before. But I have a good idea that will deff. expand my knowledge of beer and brewing. I feel that this brew community is very helpfull and trustworthy so I have no hesitation in suggesting this. Here it goes.

We need a total of 8 people for this. Everyone brews a 5 gallon recipe, ferments it, and bottles it in regular 12 oz. bottles. When bottled, each person sends the other 7 people a six pack of his/her brew with the recipe, conditioning information, and any special asides he/she feels neccesarry. In return, each person receives 7 six packs of carefully, lovingly crafted homebrew with the recipe to make said brew.

Obviously this will cost a couple bucks to send 7 six packs out, but what your getting is not only a plethora of different beer, but the recipes to brew them.

After everyone gets the beer, as a group we can all drink/discuss and add constructive criticism if neccesarry to each persons brew.

I think this is a great idea. I know I have a batch ready to bottle on sunday. It is my first batch....so it may not be as good as someone with more experience....however you can think of it as a collectors edition....like Michael Jordans rookie card.

All i got left to say is I claim one of the 8 seats....so 7 are still left. Once we get a group together I'll have people PM me with information such as address and email and I will put together a master list of addresses to send to everyone involved.

Word! I do the same thing once a month when my local club meets. We all sample each other's beer and talk about how we made it. What went wrong, what went right.

I'd suggest joining a local club. If there isn't any, start one.

Sending 7 six-packs is gonna get expensive real quick. How about just sending out 2 or 3 bottles each?

I guess the best thing to do would be to find out how much the shipping would be...Ill try fedex, ups, and usps and see how much it is per weight of liquid (then we can do the math and find out whats best).

Also, I believe that it is illegal to transport alcoholic beverages across some state lines via mail service. Might want to check local and state regulations.

Just spoke with UPS and it is AGAINST THE LAW unless you are contracted to do so, I.E. you pay the government a lot of money.

Or, you come to the Maryland Brewday and share with local brewers and ditch the whole idea of using any sort of mail delivery service...

I just joined a local HB group. Got to try a bunch of beers and talk about how they were made with a great bunch of people. I would definitely recommend you look for something similar in your area.

You could try to attend the next MD brewday, this weekend in joppa. They have one about 4 or 5 times a year. I think most of them bring homebrew samples and would be happy to give you feedback on yours.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to ship UPS or FedEX, which are both private companies.

It's illegal to ship alcohol via the US Postal Service, but it isn't illegal to use UPS or Fedex (but it may be against their policy).

Afaik, it's illegal to ship any alcohol by any means into my state at least. I believe it has to do with state alcohol taxes being circumvented.

I'm sure the legalities are more applicable to commercial sales and not to sending a buddy some brew.

If it were me I'd grab a flate rate box wrap up stuff real well and practice the art of ignorance. "really I had no idea I couldn't ship stuff..the comercisl said if it fits it ships."

People ship to beer contests in many areas by doing exactly as you're describing, and not disclosing the actual contents of the package. Every shipping company that I know of specifically asks the shipper somewhere during the process if the package contains alcohol. There is a sticky tutorial for shipping beer on the top of the DIY forum. It specifically mentions not disclosing that the package contains beer.

MD brewday sounds like a plan. mind fillin me in on the highlights (the other thread is 33 pages of people discussing what they are gonna bring). IE where, (I know joppa) when, what to bring (besides beer), does it cost anything etc.
