2nd year hop grower here. Lots of side shoots this year, particularly on my Goldings (the Cascades less so). The past couple of days have seemed to really spur them on - some are over a foot long. Should I try to train these like the main bines or let them just free grow?

I have trained some on my 2nd year side arms, especially the lower one close to the ground. I have found that iut makes them hard to pick.

Really good question. Part of the reason for adequate spacing between hills is not only for root space, but also to allow the sidearms enough room laterally so that they have the room to spread out. This added area for leaves is added area for energy the plant is trying to capture to have what it needs to create more flowers, which is what you want if you plan on harvesting hops.
