Should I Use A Bottling Bucket If I Strained The Trub While Pouring Into Fermenter?

Hello all,

First time brewer so any advice is appreciated. I am working on an American Pale Ale that I boiled 3 days ago. Everything went great, and I strained the trub while initially pouring the wort into the fermenter. Filled to 5 gallons, pitched the rehydrated yeast, mixed, and sealed. The airlock began to bubble steadily a day and a half ago, and I'm starting to think about bottling preparation although it's still 2+ weeks away.

My question is…would you use a bottling bucket or just bottle from the fermenter given there shouldn't be much trub? And if I should use a bottling bucket, should I get one with a spigot or can I just reuse the siphon, racing cane, and bottle filler?

You need the bucket to mix your priming sugar. Add the priming solution and rack onto that. It usually mixes pretty well but you may want to give a few very careful and gentle stirs with the racking cane once the bucket is filled.
 
Using a bottling bucket with spigot and a bottling wand attached to the spigot greatly simplifies the process.

There is no trub to stir up when mixing in the priming sugar.

The bottling wand creates the perfect headspace every time in every bottle.

Just keep your auto siphon out of the trub layer when you rack to the bottling bucket.

I'm new myself, and Ive bottled from both the fermenter and bottling bucket. I would say the bottling bucket was much easier, as youre not trying to operate a siphon and bottling wand at the same time. Plus, even though you strained the trub there will still be a ton of materials and byproducts of the fetmentation in a huge layer at the bottom of the fermentor. I would just get a bottling bucket, and also hook the wand directly to the valve with a short piece of hose..way easier!!

The bulk of the trub comes from dead yeast and by products during fermentation. So you ain't seen nothing yet! ;)

You basically need the bucket to mix in the priming solution, unless you're using sugar tabs directly in the bottles or something like that. Bottling bucket is also easier than trying to bottle from the fermentor while trying to avoid trub. You can probably make your own bottling bucket from home depot parts.
 
I agree to build/buy a bottling bucket with spigot. You want to keep the trub & yeast from getting sucked up into the bottling wand while filling bottles. I built mine for $13 a couple years ago. I like the red & white Italian spigots,as the spout has a recess for the 3/8" tubing the bottling wand uses.

I'll bet you'll be amazed on how much trub you actually will have on the bottom of your fermenter, even though you filtered. Some will be hop particles and hot break and cold break proteins that passed through the sieve. But most will be yeast, and can be an inch or more.
I agree, get a bottling bucket with a spigot and use that with the bottling wand. You'll be glad you did. :mug:
