I was hoping to transfer an ipa i did over to a secondary tonight for dryhopping. Took a quick reading and i am coming in around 1.020. (Supposed to get down closer to 1.016 or so.) Brewed this about 2 weeks ago, OG was about 1.071. Airlocks still have some activity. Think i would be okay to transfer or should i wait a while longer?
thanks!

Are you in a rush for a fermenter? Probably better to wait a few more days if you can. Take a gravity reading in 24 hours and you'll be able to make a better decision.

You will find that many on this site dry-hop in the primary and tend to avoid secondaries altogether finding the risk of infection and oxidation are not worth it. Like many topics, there are strong opinions either way. I would recommend waiting another week, then dry-hopping in the primary.

Okay, thanks everyone just put them back in the ferment chamber.

I think everyone on the site is familiar with the secondary or no secondary arguments... That being said, with plans to harvest yeast, has anyone done any real tests to see if dry hopping in primary makes a difference?

Im curious about this as well. I was planning on harvesting yeast on this batch.

Everything I've read about harvesting and washing yeast encourage doing it from low gravity and non-hoppy beers. Your OG was 1.071, which I would not call low gravity. I would only harvest yeast from beers that were 1.050 or less. Also, by adding hops to the primary, you're obviously going to make that beer even hoppier. I would not recommend harvesting yeast from this batch. I would make a mild pale ale next time and use that yeast towards a beer that's like the one you're currently making.

+2 to dryhopping on primary... but not to waiting longer without knowking if SG is stable or not.

How long has your SG been at 1.020? Thats a little over 70% attenuation. If it's stable and tastes right... absolutely go ahead and dry hop now. You want them in there for a few days anyway.
