Several spots have reasonable shipping for decent sized orders. Sometimes you just forget to order something, or just don't need a bunch of stuff. Is there any supplier which chargers actual shipping, or by weight, etc? I need about pound of malt to complete a recipe and do not need other stuff nor the $10-18 shipping charge several places have wanted.
Gambrinus Honey Malt (by the pound)
Items: $2.98
Shipping Method Price
FedEx Ground (Ground Home Delivery) $9.90
Ground Shipping (Multi-Carrier) (Ground) $11.99

Austin Homebrew Supply has a flat rate of $7.50.. I think NB might have the same deal, but I've never ordered from them.

They do if you want to spend $7.50 for a two dollar item. Guess I am just mad because I forgot to order it with the $100 plus order I just got in.

I've done the same thing. This usually motivates me to make another order for a bunch of stuff I can't really afford to justify paying another $7.50 in shipping. As a mater of fact, this is the same reason I have a good pipeline going. Time to cash out the penny jar and order your missing grains and another batch with it. I'm lucky that a local Craft Beer store in my area just started a homebrew section, and they now have grain.

It seems ordering is an art form in and of its self. I constantly consider whats available where and how exactly I should split up my order accordingly. I've done the same thing. I feel ya, brother. All I can suggest is to find a brew shop relatively near by and hope they have what you want or, as a previous poster suggested, make another order with things you might want later. Best of luck to ya, sir.

Sounds like you need a LHBS. I've done the same thing, too. But I just placed another large order to justify shipping cost and it helps to have a buddy that brews who just happens to need supplies. My LHBS just expanded and now is competing (and beating) the place I normally order from. Plus it's less than a mile from my house!

If I had that on hand, I'd hook you up. It'd probably fit in one of those flat rate boxes from the USPS, but I don't know what the rates are off hand.

EDIT: $5.35 for the small one which looks like it could work.

Think mid west supllies does actual shipping.

Yes- but for most orders, that means FedEx, which is going to make a pound of grain VERY pricey. MW will also do USPS for small orders......but I still think you'll end up paying several times the cost of a pound of malt to have it shipped.

Rebel Brewer can give you 1lb of Gambrinus Honey Malt for $1.49, and $4.99 shipping. To me, it's not worth it to only buy a pound of something online. You might want to ask somebody else who is local, if they want to order something and split the cost with you. Hope things get worked out for you! :mug:

Make it more worthwhile and get more stuff with NB flatrate. I found myself in this situation a few times, i just ended up planning ahead and getting more.

Doesn't really make sense to try to find actual shipping costs because you're still paying way too much for a pound of grain. Makes a lot more sense to buy what you need plus pick up some base malt or something in bulk and get a better deal on shipping. Spend another $10-20 on grain (that you will buy at some point in the future, anyway) and drive those shipping costs down. I'm sure you could find another brewer in your area that could buy the extra grain off of you if money is really tight.

If you are really committed to finding that one pound, some of the smaller shops probably ship actual costs. I mean local shops that have a website from 1997 and the guy at the counter is filling online orders in between ringing up customers in the store.

Ideally you want the freshest malt available, what sucks for it not being available is shipping. I would like to get a fresh bag every brew but thats possible and would cost me 7 bucks each month. How much is your cellphone- bill? I spend about 160 bucks a month on gas-i stop at the store on the way home and ride my bike on the weekend and dont drive sometimes. Maybe cut out one of the services like internet on your phone. It depends how you budget things, ive spent 4-5 bucks on a bottle of fat tire at a decent resturant.Maybe thenfew pounds is worth a one time shippingi then.Maybe eat out less, buy less food, dont shop for clothes or whatever.I mean how many times have you blew 7 bucks on something unnessasay anyway. You get a deal if you just sacrifice something else if you look at it in that light. That being said i was just take advantage of a flat rate shipping and get more malt or supplies/whatever-if you know your going to spend on it in the future anyways-than it doesnt really matter.

I appreciate all the support. We have all done it and I was just frustrated. I'll toss in a couple ounces of lactose and do without my precious honey malt this time. Could be worse, like today when I opened the lid of the fermenter and saw small circles of something floating on top of my three week old dunkleweizen........<sigh>.
