I had a tasty meal last night, Shepherd's pie made with lamb shoulder marinated overnight in my smoked maple porter and then sauteed with potatoes, vidalia onions, mushrooms and leeks. I boiled the bones to make stock which I reduced down and mixed with condensed cream of mushroom soup. I simply baked the sweet potato fries with a bit of salt and olive oil.

Oh so yummy.:mug:

I hate you. :D

It sounds great! But all the shepherd's pie I have ever had has had a baked mashed potato topping. Am I missing something in the canon of great Shepherd pies?

Looks great.

I don;t think I have ever had a shepherd pie that wasn't topped with potatoe mash.

Once, in a pub, I had a pot. crusted pie that also had a reduced brandy drizzle over top. HEAVEN!

Don't listen to them man, you don't have to brew your pies to style.

That's why there's category 23 Specialty Pies

This is explicitly a catch-all category for any pie that does not fit into an existing style category. No pie is ever “out of style” in this category, unless it fits elsewhere.

The category is intended for any type of beer, including the following techniques or ingredients:

* Unusual techniques (e.g., steinpie (cooked in a BBQ), ice/frozen pot pies)
* Unusual meats (e.g., Crawdad,rattlesnake, racoon, alligator)
* Unusual adjuncts (e.g., oats, rye, buckwheat, potatoes)
* Combinations of other style categories (e.g., India Curry Pie, fruit-and-spice pies, smoked spiced pies)
* Out-of-style variations of existing styles (e.g., low cal versions of other styles, extra-meat, “Hungry Man” strength pies...)

:D

Sounds very nice. Maybe I'll try my Old Bog Water in the marinade, it's got some peat smoked malt in it.

The maple porter was far too smokey, pretty much only good for marinating meat...

As for the Lack of mashed potatos, Ive never had shepherds pie, so I was kind of improvising, I like crust, so I made me some. The only shepherds pie recipie ive seen called for Hash intead of whole lamb meat, so I stopped reading there.

I saw something in there about "Hungry Man" strength pies! What kind of awesome voodoo created this masterpiece?!!!!! :D

BTW I'd kill for that pie and a glass of that IPA... *drool action

That looks delicious!!! :D

+1 though on Shepherd's pie having crusty browned mashed potato on top. The same thing with beef being cottage pie.

Shepherd's pie was probably the only thing my mum could cook which would be edible. I still have fond memories of it. I was lucky my dad stepped up to the plate in the cooking department. ;)

Nothing wrong with that attitude. No arguments from me! Still not shepherd's pie though, so that means you get to name it!! :D
