I'm not sure if this is getting national coverage or not, but the story is great. So apparfently they got this couple to perform on stage in front of the class with a cordless sawzall with dildo attachment and she orgazimed. Most students were reportedly moving in for a closer look. Awesome. I'd be thrilled if I paid that kind of tuition for that...I once saw this at a bachelor party years ago, I tossed in my $20 worth.:D

I'm always amazed by the "outrage" people have at something as ubiquitous as sex involving adults. People act all shocked and upset, when the reality is that the porn business in this country is bigger than the NFL, the NBA, and MLB COMBINED.

Who are we kidding?

I wonder what could be conjured-up for my Algebra course to make it a wee more interesting? Math is boring ...

I think the outrage is that they are spending their time on this crap instead of something that they can actually use to compete in the real world...

Between taxpayers, tuition (paid by their parents), grants and scholarships, college is expensive... and all of society foots the bill for it...... We are falling farther and farther behind in education..

I saw a study recently that showed students tested no better after the first two years of university than they did when they entered the university system...

I swear, sometimes I think they're dumbing down kids 'on purpose'.. If 'that' is what the curriculum is in college these days, then a degree is not worth the paper it's printed on....

Yeah, people play with themselves.. But can't they do it on their own time/dime?

And if the 'reasons' given by those involved to justify how this was somehow useful/valuable to the education of the students aren't bull s**t, then I don't know what is...

This country (in fact the entire western way of life) is in a free fall... The way things are going, it's probably a far better idea to start taking courses in learning Chinese and Arabic instead of how to attach dildos to a sawzall.........

I guarantee you that students in their countries aren't wasting their time on this crap... When the left talks about 'investing in the future'.. is this what they are talking about?

This is exactly the kind of waste that Joe Q public is getting more and more outraged about, and why he is trusting the govt (and it's ivory towers like education) less and less...

You work your entire life while they take a 3rd or more of what you make, and then when you're old, they say 'sorry' there's not enough left to give you the money we promised you in your last days.. we spent it on live sex toy shows for kids...

Damned right I'm outraged, and it has nothing to do with being prudish.... If these so called 'professors' want to feed these kids this useless crap, let them do it on their own time and their own dime.. not on a university campus...

I thought Ben Franklin said that. "He appears to have said everything else." ~ Ben Franklin

I thought Ben Franklin said that. "He appears to have said everything else." ~ Ben Franklin

Although found nowhere in the national archives or known writings of Benjamin Franklin, it is widely accepted that he once said “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

It appears that 'many' of our founders said one form or another of that.... and it also appears that they were wise men indeed, of much greater understanding that most of the so called 'leaders' and educated elite of today.....

Maybe they should cancel the sex toy class, and teach American history and US Govt/Constitution instead...

A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.

Keep in mind a few important details:

1. The professor offered this as an optional lecture after class
2. The students had to sign waivers saying they understood this was a lecture containing adult material
3. This was for a Human Sexuality class, following a lecture on fetishes
4. The sawzall belonged to a member of the local bdsm community and was not paid for by the university at all

Man, and I thought I was the only one to have been to a party where a woman got f*cked by a sawzall.

Northwestern is a private school. What does this have to do with trusting the government?
No one spent any tax money on sex toy shows for kids. Again, it is a private university, not funded by tax dollars. University students are adults, not kids.
The couple that did the demonstration weren't even students.
It is also my understanding that the optional demonstration was to correct misinformation in a video the class had watched earlier.

I think your "outrage" is misplaced. This was some kind of optional discussion for a human sexuality class. It was on campus, but it was not a part of the official curriculum and no one was required to attend it.

Sex is a normal part of life, wouldn't you agree? Why is it people freak out and get "outraged" every time this fact is pointed out? I also do not feel that learning about sex is "useless crap." A lot of guys don't know squat about sex from a female's perspective. It might pay off to listen to what the women have to say on this one.

My guess is that human sexuality class is not designed to increase GRE scores or make someone more marketable in the global economy. It is designed to help people better understand themselves and the nature of being a human being, also a worthy educational goal IMO. Not every class needs to lead directly to making a buck. We'd be a lot better off as a society if we stopped thinking of education only as something that gets you a job and a more money.

And these tests you speak of, complete horseh**t. I can't think of more wasted money than the money spent of standardized tests.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Is there really such a thing as a university that doesn't get taxpayer money anymore? I think not.. In fact, I bet you'll find a lot of grant money and scholarship money gets poured into that university just like virtually every other university in this country... not to mention the fact that the students themselves are more often than not, at least partially funding their tutition through taxpayer backed money...

And the study I spake of were not standardized tests.. It was an independent university study based on general knowledge done by another 'university'.. No, I'm not going to bother searching it out..

And yes.. College age kids are just that.. kids.. especially in todays society... They may be legal adults, but they are very much impressionable, blank slates, that are far too often taken advantage of by by 'real' adults with an agenda, that understand that they have a captive audience that is indeed 'gullible' and trusting of these adults who are feeding their minds, that they would never feed them something that will harm them...

Of course sex is a part of life.. and used properly is one of the greatest gifts in life there are.. But used wrong, can also be one of the greatest dangers in life.. as human sexuality is tied directly and deeply to human emotions and relationships.. and misuse can have a negative effect on both of those things for the rest of ones life.. It can be the difference between success or failure in all future relationships with other humans.. The scars can be many and deep...

What I see here, is a couple perverts taking advantage of the system and an impressionable captive audience to play out their own fantasies without regard to whom it might harm.. It's totally irresponsible...

I guarantee you that the other countries that are rapidly overtaking us, are not full of universities where the students are wasting their time on this kind of crap... They're hard at work learning things that will make them relevant in the working world...

I could also be wrong, but that is 'my' opinion..

Hmmm... Let's see. Who might have a more educated opinion on sexuality in society:

Professor J. Michael Bailey:

BA Math from Washington University
PhD in Clinical Psychology from University of Texas
22 years as professor at Northwestern
Was head of the department of Psychology at Northwestern.
Published author and respected scholar.

or...

Some dude on the internet who cites an "unknown" university study about "general knowledge" that is declining.

Come, on bro. You make some very respectable points, but this guy is not a pervert. I have considered your view. I just am not able to really understand its origins. I don't see the harm in this.

While there may be problems in education, I don't think Northwestern University is contributing to them on a mass scale. Nor are they at the heart of the public pensions now being threatened. This is an elite university most of us couldn't even get accepted to. The problems you mention likely have their origins elsewhere.

Please consider the idea that closeting people for differing slightly on the spectrum of human sexuality has potential to do harm. That's why I decided to comment.

According to the article, the 'participants' in said 'act' admitted that they enjoyed it because they are exhibitionists... so yeah, I'd say they were using the hormonally overcharged students, already being bombarded with this kind of imagery and message from every possible angle in a society that is obsessed with it in a very unhealthy way, to act out their own perverted fantasies...

As far as all the degrees and other pieces of paper 'some dude' at northwestern has on his wall,.. that doesn't impress me even a little.. especially seeing as they're in psychology.. In fact, quite the opposite.. They 'raise' my suspicion of the man...

My degrees are in a lifetime of making the mistakes he advocates, and paying the price of his folly.... And my 'papers' are the scars to prove it...

History is full of irresponsible 'educated' people.. Having degrees and education does not make one responsible or give them moral authority.. Often times, it only makes them believe they are and do... which is arrogant to the core...

+1. Judging by his arguments against things that never happened as pointed out by KFH, I'm going to conclude that r8rphan didn't make it much past the article's title.

Since we're using famous quotes....."Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." - Albert Einstein

There's nothing wrong with being an exhibitionist. It's not perverted, no more than the sh**t the average Joe thinks about. Nothing is being advocated here but being honest and self reflective. By many credible accounts the pornography industry is larger than Hollywood. How can you say that this is not appropriate in our society without being a hypocrite. Clearly, people really are okay with this stuff.

The hypocrisy is really stunning. Hey kids, don't drink alcohol. It's dangerous and will ruin your life. Wait, I'm 21, bars here I come! Don't drink and drive because responsible adults never do that. Hey, how come every bar I pass has a parking lot packed with cars?

The truth is, young people are much smarter than you give them credit for, sir. They see right through this kind crap. And although you can always pull some example of a person who has educated himself and then used it to harm, that does not discount my point. This is an educated person who has dedicated his life to studying humanity in a meaningful way. You cannot dismiss him so easily.

You know, more offensive than any of this stuff is your inability to listen and consider a view different than your own.

First of all.. You are using the term 'hypocrisy' improperly... For that to have merit, you have to show that I am guilty of doing something that I say is wrong.. But for the record, 'all' men are hypocrites.. we only differ in degree and area of specialty.. and your calling another a hypocrite (especially another you know nothing about) is the epitome of hypocrisy... But that is something you have been trained to do.. It is a reactionary argument..

Secondly, can you show where I am unable to 'listen' to views other than my own? You are confusing 'disagreeing' with those views as not listening..

As far a young people being smarter than I think they am.. define what you mean by 'smart'.. If you mean the ability to discern or wisdom, then no they are not. That is something that takes 'time' and experience.. If you mean intelligence, then that has nothing to do with age... that is genetics.. if you mean 'educated'.. then that is only relevant in light of what they have been taught, and by whom, and for what purpose...

I have noticed a trend over the last several decades where kids are taught 'what' to think in school now, where as they were at one time taught 'how' to think.. They can no longer make a rational choice on an issue apart from an emotional argument... The thought process is almost entirely 'reactionary'.. as your arguments are case in point...

Pervert means to use in a non-intended way.. Or it also means to use in a non-standard or accepted way... I could easily use the same term to describe what activist judges do when they try and legislate from the bench by distorting a laws original intent, by redefining terms or distoring history...

The point I was making was to support the argument I made that those putting on this little 'class' were doing so for their own amusement, and their attempts to justify it were ridiculous.. Their admission of their exhibitionism fetish, is 'evidence' of this.. not merely my speculation..

The fact that a lot of people do something is not an argument for the wisdom or morals behind or ethics of or against that behavior... It is only what it is, that a lot of people do something... There are literally millions of radical jihadists that want to subjugate me and you to sharia law.. but the fact that so many want to do this, is not an argument that it is a just or moral thing to do... If the sheer numbers of people engaged in a behavior or belief were an argument for the truth of that matter, then Christianity is true.. case closed, and you must submit to it... Because there are literally Billions who believe 'that'...

The above argument is one your mother should have taught you when you were a child... That 'everyone else is doing it' is not a reason that she should let 'you' do it.. And the fact that you made it is evidence f what I mean about how people are being taught 'what' to think, instead of 'how'..

Finally, you pointed to one thing you deemed bad behavior to justify another thing you deem bad behavior.. (and you did a piss poor job of it at that)... That is something else that your mother should have taught you as a child.. Pointing to someone elses bad behavior does not justify your bad behavior... Again more evidence that you have been taught 'what' to think, and not 'how' to think..

I gave you 'reasons' why this sort of stuff was not 'wise' to foist on 'blank slates'... blank slates who do not yet understand the impact of what they feed their minds with will have on their entire life... You attacked me back with 'emotional' arguments..

This is something you have been taught.. You have been programmed to 'bait' others into a name calling match to divert them from the actual topic being discussed... By attacking my character, this is what you are attempting to do..pervert normal debate/discussion of ideas.. it's a tactic used by those who have no real answer or argument of their own..

I judge whether things/philosophies/ideas are 'good' or 'bad' for my country, my fellow man, and my own life... by the fruit that the tree produces.. If the tree produces bad fruit, then I can 'deduce' that the tree (the idea/philosophy/worldview) that produced them is also bad...

That is as much as I am going to discuss this with 'you' as I can tell from your last post that it is 'you' who will not listen, and are as such unreachable.. and must be defeated... You can not be converted by logical debate, and so defeat or surrender are the only options.. surrender is not an option from where I sit.. so defeat it is..

My friends and I will see you at the ballot box... (and we way outnumber you, and have had enough of your BS and are taking our country back)

Cheers,
:mug:

As far a young people being smarter than I think they am.. define what you mean by 'smart'.
In context this is funny as hell. :)

if you mean 'educated'.. then that is only relevant in light of what they have been taught, and by whom, and for what purpose...

So is education only valid in subjects and teachers that you approve of? You seem highly distrustful of education. What is valid in your opinion? Who is qualified to teach? What purpose are people being educated for that you do not approve of?

... I could easily use the same term to describe what activist judges do when they try and legislate from the bench by distorting a laws original intent, by redefining terms or distoring history...

... There are literally millions of radical jihadists that want to subjugate me and you to sharia law..

Activist judges, radical jihadists?
So is this some conspiracy between university teachers, students, radical jihadists, and activist judges to subjugate us into sharia law? Is this a frightening prospect to you?

I gave you 'reasons' why this sort of stuff was not 'wise' to foist on 'blank slates'... blank slates who do not yet understand the impact of what they feed their minds with will have on their entire life...

Again, this was not foist upon anyone. No one has to attend a university, take a human sexuality class, or stay after for an optional demonstration.

My friends and I will see you at the ballot box... (and we way outnumber you, and have had enough of your BS and are taking our country back)

"your" country? Taking it back from who? This is not your country any more than it is mine or anyone else's.

:mug: to you too my fellow American homebrewer!

This could go on forever... So I wont.. Because those who are bent on seeing how far they can push the limits of society till it breaks, will not listen.. and if they succeed, it won't matter...

All I can say is history repeats itself.. unfortunately... and it 'always' uses the impressionable youth to do so... as they yet lack the maturity and perspective to know different...

As far as taking the country back.. there has been far too much power, in the hands of a very vocal minority for far too long (about five decades now)... They own the microphone (or perhaps megaphone is a better term), but it's time to rip it from their whiny politically correct hands... because they're never happy, and wont be until they tear down everything that has been built before them...... the previously 'silent' majority is finally getting angry 'back'...

We saw a similar backlash after Carter, but this one looks to make that one look like a sandbox game... The stakes are much higher now...

And dude.. you sound like someone who knows better than to make much out of typos and grammar errors on a forum about beer drinking... that 'too' in context is funny as hell...

History is full of irresponsible people..

There, fixed that for ya. Acting like educated people are the only irresponsible people around is, well, irresponsible.

Having degrees and education does not make one responsible or give them moral authority.. Often times, it only makes them believe they are and do... which is arrogant to the core...

You need any help with that chip man? I've gotten mine off of my shoulders, and figure that maybe I should help with yours since it seems so large...

This professor was an idiot, and was probably trying to stir up a scandal.

Somehow tying it to the downfall of America, educational instutions, and so on seems, well Glen Beck-ish, aka hyperbole, aka making a mountain out of a molehill.
