I have tried making a yeast separation funnel from an Erlenmeyer flask:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1115059

The pictures of the yeast are after a few hours, and after a day.

There are two distinct layers, can anyone shed some light on what I have ?

In the primary I used this yeast:

In the secondary, I added sugar, honey and:

The yeast is from the secondary, about 13L/4gal of BarleyWine.

Thank you,

From Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation. Buy this book, it's excellent.

"You will see a small layer of dead cells, brown yeast, and hop bits settle at the bottom. The layer above that should be the largest, with a creamy layer of yeast and water. A layer begins to form on the top that is mostly water with the lightest of cells, proteins, and other matter."

You want the middle part.

Sep funnel is a good idea! I wonder what a 4L would cost...

*Edit, I clicked your link...that's a cool idea, though I suppose a 4L or 5L would be super top heavy
