Hi all, just wanted to share a cheap solution for folks looking to add a little warmth to fermentation. I just picked up a seed mat warmer for starting seeds in the spring. It's a 20 watt pad 9x20 that puts out 90 degrees or heat at 70 degrees. You can also get a small temp controller with an external temp probe. It's rated to 1000 watts. I'm using it to warm a barrel for primary and secondary fermentation. It adds about 6 degrees to a 30 gallon barrel. It only cost $25 and the controller was $35. I'm sure it would work on a Ssbrewtech brew bucket or conical. Used with the prob you could probably get a 10 degree boost over ambient temps that you can regulate on a 5 gallon batch. We use one of those in conjunction with a 28-bottle wine fridge we've converted to a fermentation chamber. That way we can heat OR cool, whichever is called for. Works great, and yes, as you say, it's a pretty inexpensive investment.
