I've brewed my first batch last Saturday. I first steeped 1/2 lb of flaked corn for 35 min at about 150 degrees. Secondly I brought it to a boil and added 5lbs of light malt extract and returned to a boil. Then I added the bittering hops and boiled for 45 min. For the last 15 minutes I added Irish moss and aroma hops.
We cooled it to about 65 degrees and taken a hydrometer reading of 1.042. Then we added a pack of Wyeast ale yeast and aerated the wort and placed in a plastic bucket for primary fermentation.
The directions say to leave in primary (bucket) for 3 to 7 days then transfer to a secondary (glass carboy) to settle for 7 to 10 days before bottling. Can I just leave it in the primary and maybe start another brew to put in glass carboy instead of moving the first batch around? I'd like to have a small pipeline built up for the day I can finally taste this stuff.
Thank you for reading. :mug:

Yes, just leave it in the primary. Most seem to keep the batch in primary for 3-4 weeks around here.

Yeah don't bother with the secondary. A search on here will give you in depth reasoning of why it is not necessary. Just leave in the primary for at least 3 weeks.

From one newbie to another...most HBT folks belive in skipping the secondary. I've only brewed 2 batches so I don't have an opinion yet. However, when folks that have been brewing for 15, 20, 25 years swear by primary only...thats good enough for me to go with the opinion of the masses.

Leave it and ferment a new batch in your carboy. Just don't forget your blow off set up if you have a smaller carboy.

No secondary. Not until you know why to do it. Then you won't do it unless you have a reason. If you need room in a bigger fermentor to brew the next batch, you do have a reason.

And I have a reason! My primary is a 6-gallon BB, while my secondary is a 5-gallon BB. I want and need the added head space for the early hours of fermentation, but once it settles down, I need my primary available for other brews. Therefore, I rack over to secondary as a practical matter; the primary has GOT to be empty when I brew another batch.

Just buy another primary, you can get a bucket, lid and airlock for less than $20
