all in all my second brew day went well

I did have just a small problem

while steeping the grain had some friends drop by

so I turned the burner down but not off during the steep

came back 15 or so min into the 30 min steep

and the temp was almost to 200 and the wort was just about to boil

everything else went great

a midwest kit Porter

smelled wonderful

so my question is by heating the grain almost to 200 did it give off anything unwanted in the wort?

You can extract some tannins at those high temps, don't worry about it too much. Most of your flavor provile will still be coming from your extract.
Chalk it up to learning, see if you can identify the flavors in the finished beer.

Yep, maybe not the best beer you could have made, but maybe a new style?? I'm sure it will be very drinkable (oops, I think Bud has licensed that term!)
