Got my first batch going yesterday: Scotch Ale with extra smoke and hopefully a successful dryhopping of oak chips soaked in Scotch.

Shout outs to all the local breweries and brew techs who have helped me.

Looking forward to participating here more and lurking less.

Do we have to be paying members to upload pics? I took a few of the boiling day and what the yeast thought of it...

Welcome, and congratulations on a successful brew day!

What LHBS did you visit to get your supplies?

Welcome! I'm guessing Bob's Homebrew, The Cellar or Market Cellar?

You have to be a member to have an avatar pic but not to post pics, photobucket works well, just upload and paste the img code into your text

Ooops sorry for the long wait on responses. Now that I'm a paying member I'm all over this forum like yeast on malt.

Yea, Bob's Homebrew. He rocks. I felt like a doushbag for calling him Jim the other day but it was a simple mistake: The brewing gear and documentation/beer log sheets I bought are from Spokane so at the bottom of the log it says "Jim's Homebrew". facepalm

Brewing number two batch and subsequent batches every Sunday seeing as how I've got four Carboys that shouldn't be empty EVER.

Is it possible to juggle four batches or should I just do three and use the extra as transfer?

:mug:

Heck, you need at least four, especially if you ever plan on doing something that needs to sit for a while (Apfelwein, anyone?). I have five, and just bought a new 7-gallon bucket to get another batch going tomorrow morning. The challenge is that two of my existing containers are 5-gallon glass carboys, and those are a bit too small to perform primary in due to the lack of headspace. I prefer plastic buckets - easier to fill, and easier to clean.

Capitol Hill over here...

EDIT: You can have all four full. With that many by the time you need to transfer another one needs to be bottled and you can cycle through them.
I don't really transfer to a secondary unless doing a fruit or hop addition though

I'm in Wallingford. Every Sunday is a brew day with bbq at my home. All are welcome.

I almost messed up last Sunday's batch, but more on that later...

There is another brewer just down the alley from me,.. he's doing a 20gal all grain today.

I gotta get off the computer and check that out before heading to work. Oh crap,.. kitchen duty,.. didn't clean after brewing... ugh. I'll be out in an hour then.

Well,. the beauty of mistakes is that they can turn out to be happy ones.

What happened is that I was somewhat distracted by a beautiful brewing assistant (note to self, work alone) who I was having a great time with and I shorted my ingredient list.

Later that afternoon (apparently missing a great ride) I finally got around to striking kettle... just to find out after both steeping my grains and opening a can of extract, that I was short on goods. Moreover, I noticed this at 4:10pm,... Bob's home brew closes at 4 on Sundays. So I freaked. Then I realized it's all in a stasis of concentrate, so no need to freak. Sparged, then stored the incomplete wort in the fridge.

Took a nap.

Partied hard (free liquor anyone?) with said girl and stayed at her place. Woke up, walked to Pike Place Market, stopped by Market Brew and picked up a lb can of dark malt, went home and got things cookin again.

It certainly isn't "batch #2" but a new recipe that will earn it's own name of "cooperation" since my house mate wrapped up the boil, pitch, and blow-off. (Among other collaborations requiring reward by refreshment)

It's currently in blow-off and I'm going to cultivate the yeast I catch for a second pitching at transfer. It's a high gravity at 1.1 and I think the yeast will need reinforcements. I also plan on dry-hopping this new recipe,.. and I'm researching that in between catching up on web shenanigans.

I LOVE BREWING BEER!

Bawsed Bampot #2 will happen eventually. I'd like to do "Means and Ends" IPA #1 this Sunday. It's looking like a wheaty is on the roster as soon as I can compile a recipe I like. Otherwise I think I'll do one of Thomas Jefferson's recipes for 4th of July drinking.
