I finally found a keg for $50. I picked it up this morning. I pulled the spear and cleaned it out. Now to cut the top and drill for the ball valve/thermometer and site tube. What do I do with the spear? Its in good shape but I have no need for it. It seems a waste to throw it away.

Yeah, I never found a good use for the spears.

Not sure if you're planning on drilling it out all the way, or using a chassis punch... but I'd recommend a chassis punch. The hole comes out much cleaner and you don't have to worry about over heating the stainless from going too fast. I got a 13/16" Greenlee punch on eBay for pretty cheap. Occasionally you'll see them for sale in the forum.

I have only heard two things to do with them, besides the wind chimes. One is smash the end to make a mash paddle, I have never done this. The other is get in touch with a microbrewery and see if they could use it. They may trade a beer or two. I know people who have done this.

Make sure when you cut the top you dont cut the whole thing off and leave a lip for a lid. Ask me how i know...

I love that idea!

I watched a lot of YouTube and left a nice size lip for a top. I used an angle grinder cutting wheel. After making the cut I used a grinding wheel to smooth all the edges then I used a polish wheel to make sure it's smooth. It came out pretty good!
