I just picked this up for $30 here locally. Another step towards all grain brewing.

Is there an easy way for me to check whether it is SS or aluminum?
 
I would guess put a magnet to it... Not sure that would work, but aluminum is super non magnetic, if my science serves me correctly
 
Yeah, it's not magnetic, but I've also read the SS they use for kegs isn't magnetic also.

Yep, if it is a keg, then it's stainless.

Period!

Aluminum, (or aluminium, for you Brits) is NOT something I'd like to store beer in, for any length of time.

That's a nice find for $30. If you use a plasma cutter or have someone use a plasma cutter to cut a hole it the top remember to put a few inches of water in it to prevent slag from damaging the bottom. Make certain to release all the pressure from that puppy before doing anything with it.
