A scale is a device used to measure the weight of an object.
There are 3 terms used to describe the quality of the measurements given by scales (or any measuring system):
Accuracy - How close is the measurement to the quantities actual value.
Precision - How close is the measurement to previous measurements of the same quantity.
Resolution - The smallest change in the quantity that produces a response in the measurement.
A scale (or any measuring system) can be precise but not accurate, accurate but not precise, both, or neither.
Examples of each:
A 5lb weight reads 4.9lbs as measured by the scale: HIGH ACCURACY
A 5lb weight reads 3lbs as measured by the scale: LOW ACCURACY
A 1g weight reads 0.99g as measured by the scale, the next time it is weighed the scale reads 0.99g: HIGH PRECISION
A 1g weight reads 0.99g as measured by the scale, the next time it is weighed the scale reads 0.5g: LOW PRECISION
1g of grains is placed on a scale, 1 grain is removed, the scale reads 0.9999g: HIGH RESOLUTION
1g of grains is placed on a scale, 1 grain is removed, the scale reads 1g: LOW RESOLUTION

Most scales can be calibrated either electronically, mechanically, or by simply recording the offset of a known weight.
Some scales do come with their own calibration weight.
Other accessories include, batteries, measuring trays, vibration isolation pads, storage containers and wall power adapters.
Electronic scales usually have a tare function which will zero the scale with a container (or any weight) placed on it, allowing you to measure from a zero setting.
Electronic scales will usually also be able to display the weight in units of pounds/ounces, kilograms/grams, etc...
Mechanical scales will usually have one or two units of measure.

Often not thought of is the mechanical balance, which, while tedious to use does provide a viable alternate to a scale.

A scale can be used to measure volume in a pot. The weight of 1 gallon of water is about 8.34 lbs. and varies with temperature (8.33-8.35). To mark one gallon, fill the pot with 8.34 lbs of water. Continue to add 8.34 lbs for each additional mark.
