Do you need to sanitize your brewpot before you boil? It seems like that would be just sanitizing it twice since you'd boil the germs away.

I ask because I'm wondering if a stainless steel brewpot is worth the price. From what I can glean for what I've read, the only real upside to SS is the fact that you can use Iodophor on it.

Thanks for the help

I sanitized all of my gear initially but have not since then. If you are going to be chilling it in an ice bath I would make sure you sanitize the lid but the heat should kill all that is on the pot.

No need to sanitize the BK before boiling, regardless the composition.

Make sure it's clean, obviously, and then have at it.

I've been using a 5 gallon (20qt) SS stock pot from the beginning & just keep it well cleaned, rinsed & dried. No need to sanitize,as the boil does that. I keep the lid on it while stored under my fermenter stand though.

I follow the above advice, and only clean it well after each use with soap/h2o, then rinse before the next use. I also always keep the lid on it, like unionrdr, to keep dust out when storing.

I don't because the temp will be high enough to kill any bacteria. However I always put Campden tabs in my strike, sparge water when heating

I would suggest boiling water for about 30 minutes in any pot you decide to use. Not to sanitize but to build a protective layer on the inside of the pot. You can use PBW/oxyclean on stainless and not aluminum. Stainless is more durable but aluminum is a fine option as well.

There's no need to build a protective oxidation layer on Stainless. Someone posted an article recently that said stainless only needs to be cleaned, rinsed & air dried to do this, unlike aluminum. I didn't save it,but it's on here somewhere. I never had any problems with my SS stock pot in this regard.
