S.G. Math - having a brain fart

This should be easy, but for some reason I'm struggling with it -

Goal is 3 gallons of cyser at OG 1.090.
I have 1.5 gallons of apple juice at 1.040. Watered down a bit from it's usual 1.050. I want the honey to contribute more than half of the sugar.
So I need 1.5 gallons total of honey & water to bring up the gravity to 1.090. Assuming the honey is 1.035 points per pound per gallon, how much honey and water will I need to get to where I want to be?

I think you need 10 6 lbs of honey.

When you water the apple juice to 3 gallons, the result will be 1.020 (per gallon if you wish). To get to 1.090, that's 70 points, which is 2 pounds per gallon and you need five gallons worth so 10 lbs. three gallons worth so 6 lbs.

But there's no conservation of volume for liquids added together and I think that much honey might take some space so I don't know if it would be exactly 1.5 gallons of water. But you could go light and top off.

But wait just in case I'm doing it incorrectly...someone will double check me.

Blending calculator says that if you have 1.5 gallon at 1.040 SG, that you need another 1.5 gallon at 1.14 SG to get a blended 1.090 SG at 3 gallons of total volume. That will be different if you want a bit more for racking loss.

The mead calculator says that for 1.5 gallons at SG 1.14, that you will need 5.839 Lb of honey.

Silly mistake it was 3 gallons in the end not 5. Should have been 6 pounds by my estimate. I thought 10 lbs would have been a lot for a smaller batch.

Any idea what 79.6% sugar relates to? Because 5.8 lbs. at .035 SG/pound/gallon comes out to 1.135 in 1.5 gallons.

I believe that is in reference to granulated cane sure being 100% as a reference.

I will say that in my personal experience, the weight of honey called out by that calculator has been pretty spot on. Obviously it can vary as it is a natural product but it has been damn close in my use.

I can't figure out how to use those calculators. If I wanted to raise this to 4 gallons - 2 gal. of 1.040 cider and 2 gallons of honey/water to a total of 4 gal at 1.090, can you tell me how much honey?

Start with the Blending calculator. Select it over to Specific Gravity (SG).
Now we enter our known of a volume #1 of 2 (gallons) at SG #1 of 1.040
Now in Volume #2, we tell it we are adding 2 more (gallons).
In the Blended SG, we input the final SG that we want to end up with, and then press the radio button under SG #2. It will populate with the SG that you need to get your blended amount; 1.140

Next to the batch calculator. We need 2 gallons at a SG of 1.140

Go to Target Volume, enter 2 and then click the Target Volume checkbox to lock it in as a value that is fixed.

Go to the Target Gravity section and enter the SG of 1.140 and click the Target Gravity checkbox to lock that in.

Your additional Sugars #1 field (which was defaulted to honey) should have changed to show you that you need 7.785 Lb of honey to get that 2 gallon must at the requested SG.
