Hey guys, I've never ordered any of the kits from AHS but since my brewstore doesn't carry the yeast i want, i was going to order a kit. Then i can across this Crisp Rye Ale kit and it got me curious. I've never tried a Rye beer before and was wondering if anyone has used this kit before or made a rye beer and what it's like.

I've had a many a wheat beers and love them with a passion, should i go out on a limb and try some rye? Thanks guys

I have been wondering the same thing. I would like to try one but would hate to brew 5 gal. of it and not like it.

I like rye bread, and i like beer....sooooooo by that logic.
I was thinking the same thing when I brewed the 666 we did here at HBT last year. There was a lot of rye in it and it didn't taste like rye bread at all. Actually, I'm not sure what the rye did for the flavor of the beer. It had so much other stuff in it that mine tasted like scotch.
From what I've read, rye makes a beer taste crisper. I've got my version of 777 IPA in the secondary and it has a fair amount of rye in it. It will be interesting to see how it effects the flavor.

I've added it to a batch and it definately has an extra bite to it. Don't use a ton though, I think mine was 9% of the bill.

If you can find it, Hop Rod Rye from Bear Republic in amazing. It's about 25% rye. My Bent Rod Rye is a summer version.

Thanks for the input, but i want to know what the flavor profiles are and what you liked about them. I personally like crisp, malty beers. Not so much hoppy and heavy bodied (like i love porters but too much hop or too much chocolate malt kill me). Will it be good?

Blah Blah Blah! So.... when you brewen MY rye beer:mug: LOL just kidding. Just because of this thread I am going to brew our DC 3rd place porter and step up the rye a bit more. It is really good for head retention:D if used in small amounts

Hop Rod Rye good.... mmmmm.... It is a tiny bit high on the ibu's but it is still a very sexy beer. Guess i'm just a bit off but there are only a very few really bitter beers that i enjoy. They are the ones that need the bitter to balance out the sweetness that huge beers still have. Hop Rod Rye is a VERY TASTY BEER though. I get some from time to time and will grab one when in the mood in the future for sure. I have heard RYE is a sticky grain to use. Should rice husks be tossed in just in case if someone was to go up to 25-30% rye on the grain bill?

I did the AHS Rye Pale Ale kit several months ago and it was excellent stuff!

Of the commercial examples I have only sampled Founders Reds Rye and Black Rye ales, both rather tasty but much different styles than the Rye Pale I brewed.

I would say that is a definate yes. Anything about 17-18% would need rice hulls in most systems. Never hurts to put rice hulls in and it is cheap insurance.

If you're curious, try to get your hands on Real Ale Brewing Company's Full Moon Pale Rye Ale - http://www.realalebrewing.com/ - I think "crisp" is probably the best word to describe it. It bites back without being bitter, as in extreme hoppiness. It is hands down my favorite beer at present.

Of course, if you aren't in Central Texas, you probably can't find it. Hell, my local store can't even keep it on the shelves (Wednesday is delivery day!).
