Nitrogen is used only for serving, and it's never a requirement. I think a RIS served with nitrogen would be wonderful, but there are plenty of people that don't like beers on nitrogen.

Go ahead and keg it, and carb it up the way you normally would.
 
RIS, by style anyway, have little carbonation to speak of. IMO, putting nitro on a RIS would completely change the flavor profile of the beer, and not for the better. These beers are also meant to be served at 50 deg F or even higher due to the heavy body & high ABV.

Save the nitro for your irish stout, oatmeal stout, etc...

Isn't the low carbonation level exactly why you would use nitro? It doesn't dissolve into solution with the beer, allowing you to serve at a higher pressure level than you want to carbonate to, which allows for good head even in low carved beer?
 
Nitrogen would smooth out the rough edges of a RIS, very much changing the beer for the worse imo.

You've obviously never had Old Rasputin on nitro. Mmmmmmm......

I guess it depends on your personal preference and what you're going after. There is plenty of aroma and flavor already in many RIS, so I have never said, "that would be better if it was on nitro".

I have, but again, personal preference. I wasn't blown away by it, or thought it made the beer taste even marginally better.

I look at it like this: putting nitro in a well crafted RIS is like putting steak sauce on Kobe or Angus steak.

Yep pesonal preference, and I guess we'll amicably agree to disagree. I think nitro actually lets the flavors meld and shine, plus you get that yummy mouthfeel. I look at it like this: a well crafted RIS on nitro is like ordering that kobe stake medium rare, rather than medium or medium well. :D
