There is lots of discussion around washing yeast and not washing yeast. I've decided I will wash my yeast. ....

However, if I make 4 vials out of my yeast cake (5 gallon batch), how many vials should I use for my next 5 gallon batch?

Can someone hook me up with a simple equation/guide as to doing this as a beginner?

Try using Mr. Malty. It has a tab for pitching from a slurry. Some people think it overestimates how much slurry to pitch, but you can use it as a starting point and gauge your results.

So let's say you brewed a standard ale with an OG of 1.057 and pitched the required 220B cells. Fermenting a 5 gallon batch would yield around 800B cells. Splitting it up in fourths gives you about 200B cells per vial. So if you brew another batch soon after you need one vial for a standard batch.

Perfect- Cheers for a straight answer. The other answers don't actual help my question at all. I guess that's the problem with forums, everyone gives their 2 cents.

So let's say I use one vial, and then wash the yeast from that. ..... Will that give me another 4 vials i can use? Effectively turning one packet of yeast into 16?

Whats the risk of using 2 vials, I've heard people talk of overpitching but I know nothing about it.
