Remnant Ale

Cleaning out some leftover specialty grains & hops:

6 gal batch, 38 IBU's, 1.041 OG

7.5 lb 2 row
2 oz Chocolate
1 lb Crystal 40
.5 lb Flaked Oats
1 oz Centennial @ 45 min
.5 oz Cascade @ 15 min
.5 oz Cascade @ 5 min

I don't even know what you'd classify this thing as. It won't be quite dark enough to be a brown ale, but probably too dark for a Pale. I'm mashed in right now, and it has an interesting color....kind of looks like a chocolate milkshake - very light brown color.

I was thinking it looked like you were almost in red-ale turf, although probably moreso if you were using black patent instead of chocolate. Just looks like a pretty good beer to me!

Well, you're right - it ended up VERY red. Much more so than I would have expected from only 1lb of 40 degree crystal. I wouldn't call it a red ale, but anyway the wort tasted good! Really weird, because it looked light brown in the mash tun, and the first runnings were almost black. Crazy stuff.

I overshot my efficiency a little and ended up with 6 gallons @ 1.044 after the boil. Not too bad.

With those hops, take a hint from Widmer & call it a PNW Red.

Looks like about 48 IBUs. That looks like a good session beer. Remnant Red might become a regular for you!
