Yeah, we did a heck of a lot of fishing and hunting, even some trapping but after we moved into the city, we had some relatives that were very generous at birthdays and Christmas.

We got the "oh, those poor children don't have any toys!" treament and my Dad would tell them, they don't need a lot of toys. it was cool because, espeicially in the Spring, Summer and Fall we would spned the vast majority of our time outside, actually even in the Winter. We grew up part of the time in Saginaw, Michigan but Dad moved us back out of the city after about 4 years - thankfully. i still don't like cities.

Man so many cool toys I did not have. I had to settle for old fashioned fun like hunting and camping :rockin:

I hear ya. As a kid I loved going camping. I had my sleeping bag that we got by redeeming S&H Green Stamps ... a backpack from Santa ... and my first hunting knife that I got for selling subscriptions to Michigan Out of Doors Magazine ... they didn't pay you with money, you chose a "gift".

I had forgotten about Michigan Out of Doors mags, and the tv show.

The TV show Michigan Out of Doors is still on.

The show's always been known for great theme music too ... the new theme is good ... but the old theme was the best.
Music that brings back lot of memories for a lot of guys (and gals) my age ... particularly memories of our fathers and grandfathers.

I still remember that old theme by heart from I guess more than a quarter century ago now (I'd committed it to memory as I thought I'd learn it on guitar) ... if you remember the melody ...

Old theme - Michigan Out of Doors
"From the rugged shores and woodland of the North it's history; of copper mines and iron ore, the Great Lakes fisheries,
To the farmlands of the southern counties we'll look around again, and all that waits for sportsmen in the State of Michigan,
And sometimes when the moon brings out the diamonds in the snow, and the stillness of the forest lies encased in arctic cold ... the wind might whisper through the trees, listen if you can; it tells you of the beauty in the State of Michigan."

I haven't lived in MI since 1977 but I remember the melody and started singing it as I read the words.
Thanks Mate!

Whoomp there it is!

That was my first cell phone lol

Man I had forgot about the S&H green stamps. I never got much out of it though :D

My first sleeping bag was a high tech all season as long as it was warm bag. Just a bunch of blankets hehe. I joined the Army and was thinking cool now I get a real sleeping bag and I did get one but I have to say it was a lot of years after the Army before my idea of camping did not include a motel west.

Now every summer I spend at least 6 or 8 weeks up in the hills. But since the ground seems much harder to me than I remember as a kid I pull up a camper and enjoy the comforts of a stove and fridge and most important a bed.

Tom and Jerry were enemies.
Parents didn't blame video games and McDonald's for their fat, stupid kids; they told you, "shut off the tv, eat your vegetables, and go outside and play."
Your little league coaches weren't trying to molest you.
You could sit by your grandfather while he smoked cigarettes without some a hole making a federal case about it.

Remember these:

A buddy of mine bought a bachelor pad when we were about 20 and we found a set of these in the garage while cleaning. After 10 mins we almost hit him and hit the roof pretty hard and broke some glass. His father took them away before we could have drunken fun with them

Remember these were metal. Mine was a hand me down from my uncles so it was already dented sharp and rusted. I didn't have a peanut allergy.

Speaking of which. No one did. No one had any allergy so bad if something was in a room they'd go into anaphylactic shock. And we were allowed to bring BUTTER knives to school for our lunch

In 9th grade, I remember bringing a 12 gauge shotgun to school (with prior approval from my teacher) and doing a presentation to the class on how to field strip and clean.

Try doing that today.

These may still be around, but when they first came out every kid on the block had them. No helmets or pads, trying to perfect this stupid idea. Bust your head on the concrete and be completely whacked out from reality, and get back on it and try it again. Think those are called concussions these days. :drunk:

Nintendo had this so you can break your neck while playing a video game. You could tell how radical it was by the neon shoe laces and rolled up jeans

They didn't have "dog parks", and you took your dog with you to the regular parks.

We were the first kids on the block to have color tv. We only had access to 3 channels, but we were happy! Remember listening to Beach Boys, Doors, Stones, and Beatles. Nancy Sinatra and These Boots Were Made For Walkin'. Kids played outside all day and night (during summer). We watched cowboy 'n ***** movies (they're not pc now so they're rarely aired). "Aired", now that's an archaic term. Gas was 29 cents/gal. We rode in the back of pickups. Had blood-brothers. Watched Monster Theater on Saturdays. Disney at 7pm on Sundays. Learned Basic on the teletype in hs. Used 8 ch paper tape and ibm cards. Used to be able to "read" the little holes. Remember RPN, Reverse Polish Notation?

Remember when a computer was as big as a 9 ton truck and the only calculators we had in college were one of these....

I remember in HS we used to have slide rule races -who can come up with the answer the quickest - what a bunch of geeks!

Anybody remember Bosco chocolate syrup? How about Brook's catsup? Beeman's gum? Remember Bobby Orr, Dick the Bruiser or Jack LaLane? Remember when you needed a lic from the FCC to operate a CB radio?
