I used to work in a garage that used a refractometer for checking antifreeze. So I've been wondering about how the Brix scale would compare to Ethylene Glycol antifreeze percents. So yesterday, I did a titration:

50% antifreeze- off the brix scale, mine goes to 30.
33% " 24 Brix
25% " = 19 Brix
20% " = 15 Brix
16% Antifreeze= 12 Brix

I checked my truck, it read about 32 Brix. I figure that's good enough for my climate.

It is best to test cold, so you can remove the radiator cap. But let it warm up with the cap removed, to get a sample of whats in the radiator, not what got sucked back from the overflow tank.

Hmm, I suppose a hydrometer would work too. But then you would need to draw a bigger sample than just sticking your finger into the radiator.

Yea.
Be careful crossing the bay on the ice road over to Coronado, Nanook!

Very interesting, though.
