Many thanks for the assistance.

I am planing an 11 gal Strong Scotch Ale with a 48QT mash tun. Recipe follows. Since I can not fit the whole grain bill in, I swapped out some grain with DME. I have enough room for the first step of the mash, but lack enough room to mashout with out first running out some of the initial wort.

Question:
In order to accomplish this brew do you see any issue with running out a couple of gallons once the intial step is complete, and then adding the mash out H2O once I have enough room?
Can you see a better way of accomplishing this?

Thanks, makes sense. I have not fly sparged before, so was hesistant to do it first time on this batch. I am thinking about skipping the mash out. I have heard some debate on efficacy of the mash out.

I recall, although potentially incorrectly, that 1.25 H2O ratio is the smallest that you should go. Not sure if it is true, or the rational.

FWIW, to mash out, I've been running off some wort, boiling it, and adding it back to the mash tun.
It isn't a decoction, per se, because the grain stays in the tun.
It makes less mess that way.

Not really sure...might this be an opportunity to partigyle a second smaller batch of a smaller beer. Or am I just too into getting things free?

My bad. I totally missed that fact in the OP. I don't think there would be enough gravity left for a small beer. I missed the part about using DME to make up some of the gravity. I thought this was a 6 gallon batch.
