Herkules Hop Recipes

There seems to be a complete absence of published recipes on this largely ignored hop. I found one from Latchkey Brewing and I include it here. If you have a proven recipe, one that was brewed and turned out great, I’d love to hear it.

One approach would be to modify a basic Belgian Golden Ale recipe. I also include a potential recipe for this approach.

Again, any ideas for using this hop are welcome.

Conan the German Pale Ale (Latchkey Brewing)

Batch Size: 6 gallons
Original Gravity: 1.049
Final Gravity: 1.008

9.00 lb Avangard 2-row
1.00 lb Vienna
1.00 lb White Wheat

0.5 oz Herkules 15.6%AA (60 min)
0.5 oz Herkules 15.6%AA (5 min)
1 oz Herkules 15.6%AA (Dry Hop 4 days)
2 oz Hersbrucker 3.8%AA (Dry Hop 4 days)

Omega OYL-052 (Conan)
Lallemand New England

Herkules Belgian Golden Strong Ale

Batch Size: 5 gallons
Original Gravity: 1.077
Final Gravity: 1.018
Estimated Color: 5 SRM
IBU: 24
Efficiency: 62%
ABV: 7.7%

Fermentables
14 lb Belgian Pilsner Malt
1.5 lb Table Sugar

Hops
0.5 oz Herkules 15.9%AA (60 min)
1 oz Herkules 15.9%AA (Flameout)
1.5 oz Herkules 15.9% (Dry Hop 3 Days)

Yeast
WLP570 Belgian Golden Ale
WLP550 Belgian Ale

Mash at 149 F. Boil for 75 minutes. Use your favorite clearing approach. Ferment 67 – 75 F. Cold crash to clear. Age for 2 months minimum.

Thank you. I have about 6 oz of Herkules I'd like to use. I've never considered using it as a late addition hop.
Maybe pair it with Huell Melon, Crystal, or Mt. Hood?

The hop guides do list Herkules for use as both a bittering and aroma hop. Golden Ales aren't dry hopped, but I have plenty of Herkules to use up. It should be smooth enough, the cohumulone is in the lower range. In fact, Chinook appears to be very similar in terms of acids and oils, but Herkules does not sound to be as piney as Chinook and Chinook is frequently used late and to dry hop. A pound of white wheat malt would probably help things some. I am most likely going to go with the Latchkey recipe, but this brew is several months out.

Herkules is mainly a bittering hop in many Bavarian brews, e.g. Schneider Hefeweizens. Some recipe ideas for those:

You could grow their yeast from a bottle, many people have done that succesfully. Their darker brew TAP6(Aventinus) is hopped with Herkules only but there is not so much information available about the exact grain bill of tap6.

Herkules could be used to bitter many styles. I think especially those that are aroma hopped with other Hallertau hop varieties (Mittelfrüh/Tradition). But probably not pilsner because there you would like to maximize the noble hop character of low alpha varieties.

Good ideas. Appears Paulaner has a hefeweizen using only Herkules.
