I bought the California Common AG kit from Northern Brewer. It comes, of course, with steam beer lager yeast. What I am wondering, though, is this-- I've got a batch now that needs to go into the secondary that used Wyeast Northwest Ale Yeast. I wonder how my new batch would turn out if I just pitch it on top of that yeast and save the steam beer yeast for later?

I thought that lager yeasts fermented at ale temperatures is what made California Steam what it is. History says so.

You could pitch it on the cake, and you'd probably get decent results. However, you'd be missing some of the esters and unique flavors that the California Common yeast has to offer when fermented at the appropriate temperatures.
