Hey Brewers,

I am relatively new to brewing, and this is my first post --requesting help from wiser minds. I got ambitious and got ingredients for an IPA (12.5lb 2 row, 0.5lb Melanoidin, 0.5lb Carapils, 0.5lb Caramel malt, and plenty of Citra hops). It wasn't until I got home that I realized my mash tun is only 5.5gallons, not 7 as I thought (rookie mistake). It was meant to be a 5.25 gallon batch using partial mash methods. The recipe I am using calls for 7.8 gallons pre-boil.

I am hoping someone can give me advice on how to proceed with this brew, whether I should just scale down and make a smaller brew or if I could do two separate boils etc. I am planning on doing a partial mash. Thanks in advance for any advice.

can you boil the full amount ? are you saying your brew kettle is too small when you say mash tun is only 5.5 gallons?

if it you can't mash because of size do half the amount then half the amount and boil it up

if it is you can't boil the 7.5 gallons to do a 5.5 gallon batch

we need a bit more info to help scale for your setup

all the best

Yes sorry, my brew kettle is 5.5gallons (I also have a second brew kettle which is 4.0). The only other equipment I have is a large cooler which potentially could serve as a mash tun (and everything for fermenting etc). My concern is that I will not be able to submerge that amount of grains along with enough water in my boil kettle, and secondly that If I do a smaller mash and top off with water at the end it will effect the OG.

To summarize, I am trying to do a Zombie Dust clone (http://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/3-floyds-zombie-dust-clone) and only have a 5.5 gallon boil kettle. Hopefully this helps. I apologize, I am fairly new and still trying to get a grasp on the whole process!

no worries there my friend :)

and indeed the info helps

are you trying to a BIAB? if not you could do two boils but that is too much like work :(

you could scale it back to smaller batch and do it for your setup

http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/calculator/

this is a pretty good online recipe calculator and it lets you look setup for you way of brewing (extract,PM,all-grain,BIAB)

how big is your fermenter? if you wanted to do it as a PM it would be easier with your brew kettle because you could do a partial boil

Yes, I am trying to do (my first) BIAB, but am not set on that if others have better recommendations.

I have a 5 gallon carboy, a 6.5 gallon fermenter and a 2 gallon fermenter (considering taking off a smaller part of the wort and trying two separate dry hops). I am trying to avoid having a low OG and efficiency.

if you have not read this link check it out it is a great read

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/easy-stovetop-all-grain-brewing-pics-90132/

you could ferment a 4 gallon batch in your 5 or 6.5 gallon fermenter but the problem for you is your boil size

you could do two smaller boils to get the 5.5 volume but then that becomes a long brew day and the fact that your are a newer brewer it is easy to have things go bad watching two pots at once

maybe easier to pick up some Dry Malt Extract and do a partial mash so you can boil a smaller volume but still do a full batch

maybe read the link and put some numbers in software

then decide, I hope that helps you a little

You can totally make it into 2 brews but make sure your volumes are correct
