Hey there,

3lbs pilsen DME
3lbs Amber DME
1lb crystal 45l - steep
1lb pale malt - steep
1oz galena 13.8% alpha 60mins
1oz Centennial 8% alpha 30mins
1oz mt hood 5.5% alpha at 5mins
SA-05 yeast

I would like some thoughts on the Mt Hood. I have really never used this, nor tasted it. I inherited some from a friend. I also have some leaf Mt. Hood that I could dry hop with.

For hop flavour I like cascade, citra, EKG (eng ales).

Input is appreciated. I am on the clock...steeping right now.

Thanks!

If you're already making it then it's too late for me to give advice on the recipe and leaving out either the crystal OR the amber DME (replacing the amber DME with light or extra light) as it's doubling up on the crystal since the amber DME already has crystal in it.

Anyway, I use Mt. Hood for late hops in Denny Conn's Wry IPA (it's great- check it out!) and love it. It's not a traditional late hop in an IPA like cascade or centennial, but it's really good!

I'd definitely move the centennial addition, though. In an IPA, it's all about hops flavor and aroma. With just one late addition, you won't have much hops flavor at all, but plenty of bitterness. I'd add enough hops to counteract the sweetness of the excess crystal malt at 60 minutes, and then move the 30 minute centennials to 15 minutes for flavor.

Like this:

1oz galena 13.8% alpha 60mins (or enough to get you to 50 IBUs or so)

1oz Centennial 8% alpha 15mins
1oz mt hood 5.5% alpha at 5mins

Dryhop with centennial and mt. Hood. I'd definitely consider adding more hops to the hops schedule if you have some! That's not much for an IPA.

Thanks man....

I am steeping...so the crystal is in...I might have some more pilsen DME though. I could sub out the amber.

I also do have other hops, such as cascade, magnum, and an OZ of amarillo. Some other noble hops which I dont think I would consider. Mt. Hood is a bit of a push i think.

Alright, just checked. I do have an oz of northern brewer (pellets) and an oz of NB leaf.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Move the centennial to 15 min or so, then add amarillo/cascade at 5 minutes and flameout. Ditch the mt hood IMO.

And yooper's not a man, man! :)

I have quite a bit of cascade and centennial.

Thoughts on amounts?

Yooper is not a dude? :ban:

I really like to hop the **** out of an IPA. I'd do something like this:

1 oz galena (or whatever) 60 minutes- IBU to 50ish (40-60 is cool)

1 ounce centennial 15 minutes
1 ounce cascade 10 minutes
1 ounce centennial 5 minutes
1 ounce centennial 0 minutes

dryhop with .5 ounces of each

If you're unsure of your love of big citrusy hops you could back off the last three additions to .5 ounces!

And no, I'm not a guy!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yooper, your input is great....same with snowveil.

However between playing on the Inet and getting another beer from my bsmt I "slightly" boiled over for the first time. Hehehe...oh well. just a sponge's worth and a **** load of spraying the water bottle and almost hyperventillating solved my problem.

Cheer dude/lady....
