recipe design discussion

Maybe we should attack this as a once-per-week thing... like, next Monday, we start an American Pale Ale discussion thread. We start out with the BJCP description, maybe crib some info from Ray Daniels. Then, we all add our own perspective - for example, I'm very happy with the APA I just did that has a couple pounds of Vienna malt for character.

Maybe set up a separate section for these discussions? Try and keep the idle chit-chat to a minimum (I know I'm the biggest offender in that area).

I'd do it in the forums and when it's done use it in the Wiki.
That way the good info is always current and not burried with time.

I don't know how much as been fixed, but it got f*ckered up really bad by someone, someone who made changes that were not easy to fix. I'm not sure the current status, I haven't been there for a while.

But, then it's going to be one HUGE thread will all kinds of good information buried in it. If I'm looking for ideas on a porter, am I going to wade through what couple prove to be dozens and dozens of pages? Isn't it better to have a PORTER-BUILDING DISCUSSION thread, where we get into the specifics of that particular style, what works, what doesn't?

probably want to make a subforum then with each style having it's own section for ideas on the recipies for the substyles, then move it to the Wiki as we feel needed IMHO it's going top be huge no matter what since what works for you may not work for me since, it's all subjective . . . I like Rootbeer extract in beer with no hops . . .

My original thought was this would be tied to (a sticky) the recipe database. It would be a series of items, including a general description (not discussion) of all-grain and extract process, ingredient descriptions (such as was on the wiki), and then specific paramaters and so forth stickied to each style. I was not thinking so much discussion material, as much as descriptions.

As long as the discussion is kept on-track, none of the stuff, I think a discussion thread on how people have approach the styles would be invaluable. Someone mentioned using Special B, I think in a pale ale; I'd love to know how that interplayed with the other malts for them, what kinds of character they got out of that brew, etc. I'd never think to use that in a pale ale, I still might choose not to, but I'd love to hear about it from them. Let's harness the collective wisdom and experience that we have here.

My ideal would be - what you're talking about as the first post in the thread, followed by our individual commentaries.

Bird, you should go take a look, it's really good.

We have a few mods on board now. The problem was at the beginning only TX could fix big **** ups. It was one idiot who didn't like the size of a page. I'm not sure if it was the same person who complained about it on here. They went in and tried to change it but fcuked up and renamed the pages.

It's going well now and if half the knowledge from this forum ends up on it then it will be comparable to some of the best brewing resources around. It'll take years toy complete but that's the beauty of a wiki.

I'm still voting for doing this in the forums. Open a style-discussion thread for a week. At the end of the week, copy and paste the best replies into the wiki. A hybrid approach.

Oh, and glad to hear that the wiki's back up; I know you and the other wiki mods have put a ton of work into fixing that back up. Props.

It wasn't "massively" vandalized. A couple pages got re-routed all to hell, and no one could fix them except TX. Now that he's given some other people SysOp powers, the problems are under control.

But I'm in favor of children, mothers, apple pie, and beer style discussion threads!

If somebody wants to start a style discussion thread then they should just do it. If somebody does not like the idea and wants to do something else, they should do that. The community will sort out what is of value over time.

I should have just started putting my idea into action, and not opened it up, because while these other ideas are creative and could prove useful, they are not the same as my original idea. It has turned into a debate about what should be done and not much has come of it.

So I think I will start working on my sticky idea and see what happens.

This is such a great idea! I just finished reading David Sutula's book on Mild Ale and am now reading Designing Great Beers. Really got me into thinking about designing my own around style guidelines. Another great thing to talk about would be yeast strains and water profiles for the styles.

I'd love to see the Recipe section made through the use of a seperate Wiki. I like one person being able to own the page an prevent discussion from happening on it, while meanwhile having a seperate discussion section acting as FAQ on the recipe. Then all pages can be connected by style formatting.
