I got myself some keggles for a fathers day present. They were pretty messy when I got them off craigslist and after removing sticker goo etc... I found a good bit of light rust. I decided to try my hand at polishing them up and also thought it would be fun to show a real time progression of it getting done. I am not sure that I will be pushing hard for a perfect mirrored look, good clean and relatively uniform is my main goal. I'll update this project as I go.
Supplies:
4 1/2 inch makita power sander (borrowed)
Paint thinner orange gel for initial cleaning (had previously)
4 1/2 inch Coarse Gator Grit pad 2pk @ $9
4 1/2 inch Med Gator Grit pad 2pk @ $9
4 1/2 inch Fine Gator Grit pad 2pk @ $9
#1 Polishing compound (store is out of #2) @ $3
#5 Polishing Compound @ $3
I don't have a true before picture with the sticker crap everywhere. For that part I used a product called Citristrip that I had from another project. I "painted the keg" and let it sit for 30 minutes while watching soccer and then just wiped all the sticker gunk right off with minimal scrubbing. Actual work was 15 minutes.
That brings us here @15 minutes
I choose to run a coarse pad over my kegs first simply because the coarse pad says it is for rust removal and the medium doesn't. All of the guides I have seen just go straight to the medium but the pictures don't seem to be rusty like mine. 6/16 got me 30 minutes of work during my sons nap and about 2/3rds they way around. I am going to try and raise my workspace tomorrow.
