I just got a Cereal Killer mill, conditioned my grain using the 2% moisture rule of thumb, set the gap to a tight .035 and this is the result. Looks better than my LHBS does...does it.look good to the experts? Can I go tighter?

With my crush I scratch through looking for whole grains. Any whole grains should crack easily by squeezing them (ie they are actually cracked but look whole still).

As soon as I find a whole grain that hasn't cracked I run it through the mill a second time.

I can see a few whole-looking grains in your crush, depends if they are actually whole or are cracked internally.

If you are doing BIAB then no harm in running them through again.

I always run my grain through twice, so as to catch any that make it through without being crushed. I don't do the conditioning thing, and I end up with a reasonable amount of flour. You look like you have some, but I suspect running it through twice will increase that.

BTW, running it through the second time takes maybe half the time.

Thanks for the replies. I'm happy with it as-is for now, I'll nudge it down a few thousandths for the next brew and see what I get. my LHBS does a decent crush but this is noticing better: less flour, fewer shredded hulls. A mill is a great investment!

I see what you're talking about. I'll go inspect and re-grind if necessary. Overall I'm please but I will tighten it up to hopefully avoid this. Thanks for the advice!!

Looks like it could be a little tighter to me as I see some whole unbroken husks. I have my Cereal Killer set at .028 but I also do BIAB and it gives me 78-80% efficiency. Even if I didn't BIAB I would still go slightly tighter than that to crush those whole husks.

Your mash efficiency will tell you your exact number. My barley crusher has been killing it with stock setting 80% minimum efficiency, have had to dilute a few recipes so far

I'd go a fair bit tighter, certainly if you're batch sparging.

Don't forget when milling smaller kernel grain, such as Wheat or Rye, you will need to narrow that gap 20-30% tighter, or most will fall through uncrushed.
